Chicago Architectural Tour

In Social Studies, our third graders learned about people, places, and events. Throughout the unit, we discussed big and small communities, our country's geography, natural resources, and our environment. We focused on urban, suburban, and rural areas while incorporating intermediate directions and map scales. It was neat how our text included information about Indianapolis and Chicago.

As a culminating activity, our 3rd graders took a field trip to Chicago. They learned about over 40 landmarks of modern American architecture as they cruised the Chicago River. Our trip began down the main branch of the Chicago River, up the north branch to the East Bank Club, and then south past Sears Tower to the old Post Office Building. During our ride, our tour guide told the dramatic story of Chicago's rise from the Great Fire of 1871. The kids were fascinated by all the information! We also saw buildings by world-famous architects including Mies van der Rohe, Skidmore Owings & Merrill, and Helmut Jahn.

We had an amazing day!
