Accelerated Reader Program Questions

Accelerated Reader (AR) is a component of the third grade reading
curriculum. Each student will be placed in a reading level based on his or
her STARS test scores and classroom observations. After being assigned a
reading level, students will pick a book that interests them. They will be
expected to read a minimum of 15 minutes each night including the
weekends. After finishing a book, students will take a comprehension quiz
on the computer.
  1. When will AR begin?
  2. When will my son or daughter advance in reading levels?
  3. What is a passing score on an AR quiz?
  4. How can I help my child with his or her AR reading?

When will AR begin?

We typically begin the AR reading program in September or October.

When will my son or daughter advance in reading levels?

Each student must read a minimum of 5 books in each level before
they can advance to the next level. After reading five books, I
will assign a new reading level. The new reading level
could be the next higher reading level or choice. Choice is when
students are given a wider range of books to choose from starting
at their level and going down.

What is a passing score on an AR quiz?

A majority of AR quizzes have 10 questions. Scores that are 80%,
90%, or 100% are considered passing. Students need to strive for
mostly 90% and 100%.

How can I help my child with his or her AR reading?

Students are expected to read their AR books on their own.
However, it is helpful if parents will ask their children about
the events in their book. This will help your son or daughter
remember the important events in the story. You could also have
your child read portions of his or her AR book to you to work on
fluency.
