NewsFlash

Just an fyi regarding the math final.  It consists of material covered on our recent CFA's.  Students are not allowed to take CFA material out the room, so they will not have these in their binder to take home.  We have reviewed in class a great deal, so must students will not need to study at extra at home.

This week (Tuesday) students should be bringing home 2 yellow papers with several bar graphs on them.  These reflect students' math progress for each of our math indicators on our CFA's through out the year.  Since students can't bring home CFA test material, I thought parents might be interested in seeing how their student progressed this year in math.  A letter of explanation should be attached.  Feel free to email me if you have any questions.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Donations to support our "prizes" for Tom Sawyer day have been flowing in.  To all who have helped, we GREATLY appreciate it.  Our parents ROCK!!

Hey parents - HHMS is currently 2nd in the voting on WLKY for best middle school crib.  Help us win...go to WLKY.com and vote for us in the left hand margin.  Thanks!

Help!  The 7th grade English teachers have planned some exciting "Tom Sawyer Days" events to follow up their Tom Sawyer unit.  The festivities will take place on May 15th after field day.  Some of these activities include contests, and winners will be chosen.  However, the teachers need funds to purchase the prizes.  If you can donate any money, we would greatly appreciate it.  Just send it in a sealed envelope with your student's name on it and title it "Tom Sawyer."  Have your student turn it in to his/her English teacher by Fri, May 11th.  Any amount can be helpful.  We will need a mininum of  $180 to cover all of the events.  If we receive more than $180, we will use it to include "participation" awards as well.  Thank you in advance for your help!!  (Sorry, we can only accept cash at this time.)

Please remind your student to bring graph paper to math class for the remaining 3 weeks of school.  If they are out, it would be very helpful if you could get some for them before Monday.  We will be needing it daily!  Thanks!!!
Also, we still have one more day of ISTEP testing on Monday.  Encourage them to come to school well rested.

Periods 3 and 5:  Reminders - Tuesday May 8th is DMR retake day and Wednesday May 9th is PROBABILITY TEST retake day.  Come prepared if you are planning to retake either of these assessments (if you scored below a B).  I will be at school early each morning (except Wed's) if you have questions or need help!

You should be able to see the HHMS cribs episode on WLKY tomorrow @ 6:15 am. If you miss it you can visit their website to see it. Please remind your students/parents that they can vote.

Due to many low grades on the previous DMR quiz in each class, I am offering a retake.  Per 7 will retake on May 7th, periods 4 & 6 will retake on May 9th and periods 3 & 5 will retake on May 8th.  Students need to review their previous quiz to practice.  Only students making below a B need to retest (the highest score achievable on the retest is a B).  [Scores less than 20/24 can retest].  Students may come in early before to school (8:30am) to ask questions and get help as needed.

Periods 4,6 and 7 - click on the link attached to today's date on my assignments webpage to open the most recent DMR's and practice for tomorrow's DMR quiz.  You only need to practice pages 1-9 of the document.

Periods 4,6 and 7 have a quiz on Wednesday over Transformations.  All classes have a DMR quiz on Thursday.  Next Tuesday, all classes will be taking the CFA Post Test.  Also, the second round of ISTEP begins on April 30th.

Honors math students (periods 3 and 5) have a data unit test on Thursday.  In my opinion, this is a tough test...kiddos will need to study and practice for this one.  Please encourage them to do so.  I have listed on my white board what they need to study and we are talking about it and practicing in class, but they need to reinforce these skills at home to be successful on the assessment.  Thanks for your help!

Students in periods 3 and 5 have recently had (and will continue to have) hw assignments that require them to watch short video clips online via my website.  Please let me know by email or signed parent note if this poses issues for your student.  All students informed me at the beginning of the unit in both of my classes that they did have access to the internet (or get it easily through friends and family in the evenings when needed).  However many students have shown up to class having not watched the videos and therefore are falling behind in what we are doing.  I can provide access for them here at school (either at 8:30 am, 3:45 pm or during per1) if needed, just let me know!  Thanks!!  (P.S. I am part of a mini research team that is piloting a process called "flipping the classroom", and this is why I am implementing the videos.  I encourage you to Google the concept and see what you think!)  HHMS...on the cutting edge :)

Goodwill and NAFCS are partnering to help the Henryville School victims.  Donation boxes will be delivered to each school building this afternoon or tomorrow.

§ Goodwill will have the following dates for pick-up days to collect any items from each building: Fridays, March 9,16, and 23.

§ The following items are being requested at this time:

Plastic totes/boxes (a huge need for these)

Garbage bags

Paper towels

Bottled water

Newspaper

School Supplies (paper, notebooks, pencils, pens, crayons, folders, staplers, tape, rulers, posters, Kleenex, wipes, etc.)

Books for Classroom Libraries

Toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, hand sanitizer, etc.)

Blankets and towels

Clothing

We will postpone the beginning of Istep testing until tomorrow.

Istep testing begins Monday!!  Please be sure your kiddo gets plenty of rest and nutrition for his/her brain!  HHMS would like to shock the state with our superb academic talent - let's show'em what we've got!!

I had a sub in math class today, and will have a sub again tomorrow due to illness.  Sorry for any inconveniences!

Students in periods 4,6 and 7 need colored pencils in math class next week.  Please remind your kiddo to bring them if they don't already have some in their locker.  Thanks!  Have a great weekend!!!

I now have plenty of circles for our circles lab.  Thanks for the quick response from many of you!!

Congratulations to 7th grader Lucas Hertle!  Lucas was the HHMS Spelling Bee champ.  Team 7 Black was honored to cheer him on to victory this past week.  We wish him the best as he enters the county level spelling bee.  Way to go Lucas!!!!

Our classroom is in need of circles - many DIFFERENT sizes of circles!  If anyone has any they can spare (jar lids, paper plates, etc.), I would really appreciate it.  I plan to start our "circle lab" on Tuesday; having the circles by Monday will help me be well prepared.  Thanks in advance!

DMR quiz on Monday; CFA Post Test next Wednesday.

All math classes have a Test next Tuesday.  Per 3, 5 - Functions and Slope; Per 4,6,7 - Slope only

Wanted the parents to know that I will be out on Tues and Wed of this week.  I have a great sub, so your kiddos are in good hands.  My father-in-law passed away over the weekend; please keep our family in your thoughts and prayers.  Thank you!

Mrs. May’s students who have been chosen to be published inA Celebration of Young Poetsshould be receiving letters in the near future. This is a legitimate contest that we enter each year. Forms need to be filled out and sent back to the contest or done online atwww.poeticpower.comin order for these poems to be published.

Per 3,5 "substitution quiz" on Monday/ Per4,6,7 "slope quiz on Tuesday"
Have a great weekend!

I wish all of my 7th graders and their families a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Information regarding math finals has recently been posted to my website.  I encourage you to go there and check out the details.  We have 7 more school days til winter break, and we have a lot of math assessment to complete.  Keep those kiddos going strong academically to finish out this semester!

The math final will be given on Mon, Dec 19th.  A review sheet will be handed out next week.  It is NOT comprehensive over the entire semester - just this quarter.

All math students were given an updated grade sheet this week.  Also, don't forget you can check their grade status any time on line with the INOW parent home portal.
Also, all classes have a quiz on Friday; please encourage your kiddo to practice!  Per 3,5 - quiz is over Slope from pages 345-348 in the textbook.  Per 4,6,7 - quiz is over percents; a review sheet is being handed out today.

It's time to get back at it again!  Hope everyone had a restful Thanksgiving holiday.
All math classes will be having a DMR quiz tomorrow (Tuesday); please encourage your kiddo to practice the problems in DMR #'s 52-59.

Per 3 & 5 (honors math) received a study guide for their upcoming unit 3 test.  It's a biggie, so remind your kiddo to study/practice for this one several times before Friday.
THANKS TO ALL OF THE PARENTS WHO HAVE ALREADY SENT IN KLEENEX.  IT'S A HUGE HELP!!

Our team is in need of Kleenex.  Our classroom supplies are running very low.  If each kiddo could send in a box, that would greatly help us out!! (They really hate using our rough, scratchy toilet paper on their noses.)

Progress Reports will be distributed today.  Finals schedule: Dec 14,15 -English, math, health/PE, Facs, music;  Dec 16,19 - science, soc st, business, reading, art.
We have a very busy week in math.  Please see my website for details - testing dates, hw, etc.  Per 3&5 have an assignment to "watch a video" - the link is attached to Monday's date on my homepage.

HHMS progress reports go out Mon, Nov 14th.  I handed out updated (mostly) math grade sheets today to all students so they could see their progress and current average.

Study guides will be handed out today for periods 4,6 & 7.  Their unit 3 Test is scheduled for this Thursday.  They also have a DMR quiz on Friday.
Periods 3 & 5 will have a DMR quiz this Thursday.  Their unit 3 test is upcoming; I will have study guide prepared soon and will announce the test date.

Per 4,6,7 only
There will be a quiz Wed over solving 2 step equations.  I have added a notes/study guide powerpoint to help kids prepare - it is on my main webpage: Wed's date.  I will have a sub on Fri of this week and Monday of next week.  The unit 3 math test (a biggie!) is currently scheduled for Nov 10th.  I will prepare a study guide in advance of this.

Per 3 and 5 only (honors)
Wed. there will be an quiz over inequalities.  I will be out of town on Friday and Monday, so there will be a sub in the classroom.  Students will need to have graph paper by Friday.

Fyi... I have had a sub in the math classroom Wed and Thurs due to illness.  Not sure yet if I will be able to return on Friday.  Sorry for any inconveniences.

Students in per 4,6 & 7 have a lengthy math assignment tonight.  They must show the correct "process" to receive credit. I have attached the notes to my webpage on today's date if needed.  It is a powerpoint document and the last slide shows exactly what their hw should "look like".  If you get a chance tonight, check over your student's work and see if they are indeed showing all of their work as the examples indicate.  Thanks!

Expect INOW gradebook home access letters to come home TODAY with your kiddo!

To practice for the quiz (per 4,6,7) you might find my "showme" video helpful.  Just follow this link: http://www.showme.com/sh/?i=68918

If a file that I upload has an extension ".notebook", you may need to go to http://express.smarttech.com/# in order to open this file.  These files are what I save from my smartboard in the classroom.

I have added review pages for the upcoming quizzes to my website.  Periods 4,6 & 7 need to click on "distributive property practice" on the Document links page or the "click here" link on todays' date on my assignments page.  Periods 3 & 5 need to click on the "multi-step equations" link on the Document links page or the "click here" link on today's date on the assignments page.  Please encourage your child to view these pages and practice!

Periods 4,6 & 7 will have a quiz on Monday over the order of operations and the distributive property.  Periods 3 & 5 will have a quiz on Tuesday over solving and writing equations.  Weather is cold...might as well stay inside and study math, right?  Have a great weekend!

HHMS has launched a new system of entry at the front office that visitors need to be aware of.  As a visitor signs in, a valid state driver's license must be submitted.  It will be scanned, and a photo nametag will be provided for each visitor.  Just wanted all of my parents to have a "heads up" on this!

Students should clean out their math binders at home over the weekend.  We discussed in class what to keep and what to toss.  We will have a fresh, new start on Monday!  (I told each kiddo what their final percent in math is for this 9 weeks on the report cards.)

INOW Home Portal letters will be sent home to parents next Friday October 21st

It is 7th grade policy at HHMS to not offer math extra credit.  The math team feels that it is important that math grades reflect "mastery of the standards", especially since math builds from quarter to quarter and year to year.  Many students and parents have asked me about extra credit, so I thought I would get this message out.  The only additional option a kiddo can have to "raise" his or her math grade is a test/quiz retake.  For this to happen, the student has to have made below a C, they have to have ALL of that unit's homework completed, they must have completed test/quiz corrections on the original test,  and they must schedule the retake with me before or after school.

The Quarterly 1 Test is this Thursday for all classes.  I have posted a link on my assignments page and in my "document links" page (see icon on left menu of my webpage) for students to use to study.  The matereial from the current Post test is also on the Quarterly.  You can access study material for that on my assignments page.
THE END OF THE QUARTER IS THIS FRIDAY.  REPORT CARDS COME OUT NEXT WEEK!

The CFA post test is tomorrow. I just uploaded the pretest to my website.  It is a clickable link (page 1 and page 2 separately) and it is listed on the main page under Mon, Oct 10th.  It would be awesome if you could review the info with your child.  Have them "teach it" to you.  It is a proven fact that one of the best ways to learn something is to teach it to someone else.  Fyi...the answers are provided.  Remind kids that work is expected to always be shown.  Thanks for all of your assistance in helping the kiddos be successful in math!

1)  All classes have a DMR quiz Monday.  Encourage your kiddos to review.
2)  Many students aren't bringing "correcting pens" to math class.  This is a daily requirement as part of their math materials expected.  Please make sure your kiddo has a pen (red, blue, green, purple, etc - not black or neon please) for math class.
3) Have a great Harvest weekend!!!!

Students in periods 4,6 and 7 are bringing home DMR letters tonight.  My intent is to have all parents read over the letter and check their son's/daughter's DMR's.  IF the "parent signature required" statement is circled, they are expected to have it signed and returned ASAP.  Have a great "hump day"!

I have just uploaded 2 math tutorial videos on my website showing why a positive number x a negative number yields a negative result  and why a negative number x a negative number yields a positive result.  Periods 4,6 & 7 have a quiz on this Friday.  Most students like to memorize the "rules" listed in textbooks, etc.  But I find that if they don't understand the "why" behind them, they forget when to use "which" rule and end up missing problems on standardized tests.  If you get a chance, please review these very short video clips with your kiddos and see if they can explain it too.

Periods 4,6 &7: Crayons or Colored Pencils will be needed in class tomorrow (Wed, Oct 5).  Please remind your kiddo to bring them to math class.  Thanks!!

Wow - what a quick response!  I have already collected $41 toward our purchase of the electric pencil sharpener.  Thank you!!!!  We can now spend more time on math and less on trying to get our pencils to function.  Since I had a bit of an overage (great problem to have), I'll keep a bit back in a rainy day fund in case we need tissues, paper, extra pencils or what not.... if that is okay with everyone.
Again, THANK YOU!  What a difference it makes to a teacher to have such supportive parents!!

Looking for a bit of help --  Apparently, hand-crank pencil sharpeners aren't what they used to be.  The ones around here have been eating more pencils than sharpening them.  Many of my math kiddos have been asking for an electric one for the classroom.  So....I am taking a collection.  Do NOT feel obligated, but if you have some change, or a buck or two to spare I will add it to our "pencil sharpener dream" envelope.  Once we hit $30 I will be able to put an electric one in our classroom.  Thanks!

Just added "simplifying algebraic expressions" on to Boling's video tutorials on my webpage to help honors kiddos prepare for Test on Monday, Oct 3rd.

I have now added a section to my website called "Boling's video tutorials".  It is located in the left margin menu bar.  I just uploaded a video explaining how to subtract with integers.  This concept is on the quiz for periods 4,6 and 7 on Monday.  I encourage you to view it and practice the concepts with your kiddo so that he/she is well prepared for the quiz.  Happy studying!!

Monday, Oct 3 - Unit 2 Test (per 3 & 5); Add/subt integers quiz (per 4,6,7)

Students in per 4,6 &7 will be getting back their FRACTIONS TEST today.  I am requiring a parent signature from all kiddos who scored below a C.  Please ask to see your student's test and be sure to sign and return if needed.  Out of the 70 students who took the test, I am needing 13 signatures back.  Also, please encourage your student (even if they don't need a signature) to review this material.  It will appear again on our CFA Post Test in a couple of weeks.  The online textbook has some excellent resources (activities, videos, practice quizzes, etc) that can help them prepare.  Like they say.... "It takes a village!"  Thanks for your help!!

Honors math classes (per 3,5) will be having a Unit 2 Test on Monday, Oct 3rd.  It will cover Algebraic Expressions, Order of Operations and the Pythagorean Theorem.

All math classes - DMR quiz next Tuesday.  Please make sure your kiddo has practiced the skills on our last set of DMR's #17-24.  Thanks!

Fyi - I have a meeting tomorrow morning that starts at 7:30am.  Usually we are finished by 8:30am, but can sometimes run over a bit.  If you had a student needing tutoring tomorrow, I will only have about 15 min before school.  These Thursday meetings usually happen once or twice per month.  Just wanted to give you the "heads up".  Sorry for any inconvenience!

Students in periods 4,6 and 7 should expect a quiz next Monday over adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions and mixed numbers.  They will have a review sheet for studying.

For any students who decide to arrive early (8:15am or later) to receive extra math help, be sure you come into the building using Door #2.  If any adult questions you, just let them know that you are there for math tutoring in Mrs. Boling's room.

HHMS Play:   "Schoolhouse Rock Live JR"    September 28-29-30-October 1 --- 7:00 --- Adults $5.00;   children/students - $3.00
MATH TEST RESULTS - overall, the math test scores was great!  I was very pleased.  If you haven't seen your child's unit 1 test, ask them about it.  Today is the CFA post test.  I have a good feeling....   Like I've been telling the kiddos --- Today it's "GAME ON" to SHOW THEIR STUFF.

Next week will be a very busy week in math!  Periods 4,6 & 7 have the unit 1 test on Monday - a study guide was handed out on Thurs.  [Per 3 & 5 had their test today.]  On Tuesday all classes will have their DMR Quiz and on Wednesday all classes will take the CFA PostTest.  I will be sending home printed grade sheets for each student either next Monday or Tuesday, depending on how quickly I can get them ready.  Official progress report day is Mon, Sept 19th.
Hope everyone has a fantastic weekend!

All math classes have a quiz tomorrow.  They were given specifics in class.
Periods 3 & 5 have the unit 1 test on Friday; Periods 4, 6, 7 have unit 1 test on Monday.
All classes have the CFA post test next Wed and a DMR quiz next Tues.

Ask to see your son or daughter's math binder (blue).  See if it looks "organized" into 5 distinct sections [DMR's, notes, assignments, assessments and class info].  Then see if there are items in each section that look like they belong there.  Organization is one of the keys to success in any class.  If we can get these kiddos off to a good start and let them know that this IS an expectation, I think we will see better success. If you see papers shoved into their math book and/or planner, please help them get re-organized and back on track.  Let me know if there is anything I can do to help!  Thanks!!  It's been a great start so far!!

Parents - I need your help!  Many of my students are still struggling with place value and rounding.  This is not in our standards this year because it is assumed to be a previous skill, but these kiddos need to know it as a prerequisite for many of the other concepts we are learning.  Could you please take a few moments some time over the next week or so and review this?  Basically, they just need to memorize the place value chart so we can move forward.  We've reviewed in class for many days, but some kiddos need more practice at home.  You can simply do a Google search for place value chart and start practicing.  Thanks!!!

Students heard about the details of this year's HHMS fundraiser today and should be receiving their envelopes on Tuesday.  Students are not required to participate, but are encouraged.  Funds will help place more smartboards in more classrooms.  Any efforts would be greatly appreciated by our staff.  Thanks!

Math periods 3&5 have a quiz tomorrow; periods 4,6,7 quiz on Thursday.  Students have been given a study guide.

Next week in math: periods 3 & 5 (honors) will have a quiz on Wed and periods 4,6 & 7 will have a quiz on Thurs.  I have attached study guides to my website (in the "document links" tab) for those who'd like to start preparing early.  Be sure you download the correct study guide for your class.

I had a fantastic time getting to meet many of the parents last night at open house.  If you were unable to attend, I would be happy to send you the powerpoint I used for my presentation.  Just shoot me an email with a request.  The first week of school seems to have gone smoothly in most areas - thanks to a great group of kids and involved parents.  Thanks for all of your support for me and your kids so far this school year.  Have a great weekend!  (Don't forget to check my website to see the current math assignments!)

Hoping to meet many new parents tonight! 6:30 - 8:20

Any graph paper is fine for math. I don't know where the 1/2 in. requirement came from on the list at registration.

Wow! What an awesome start to the school year! I have classrooms filled with well-behaved, eager-to-learn kiddos. (I’m not kidding!) And, after only 2 days, I have 87 newsflash registrations – that tells me we are off to a promising start. Some important info: Open House is this Thurs (8/18) – please come if you can. We would love to get to meet all of you. The math textbook is available online. My.hrw.com   There is a link on my website and the kids already have their usernames and passwords. There is also a link on my website with the directions on how to use it. Be sure to ask your child if he/she has turned in the purple parent form. And expect math hw Wed night!
