Frequently Asked Questions: This page contains answers to common questions of
students and parents.

  2. If my child is absent do I need to call JEL along with their home high school?

If my child can not afford his supply kit what can do?

Call the J. Everett Light Bookstore at (317) 259-5265 x44020 and make a payment
plan so that way your child will be able to get the supplies they need for
class and you can pay in a plan that you can afford. A $45.00 payment is required
before the student can receive their art supplies portion of the kit.

If my child is absent do I need to call JEL along with their home high school?

YES! You must call and report your child's absence to JEL or they will be
marked unexcused absent. Parents have 48 hours following the absence to call
us. After that the absence will be considered unexcused. Four unexcused
absences will lower your child's nine week grade one letter grade. So if your
child has a B they will now have a C. Call the JEL attendance line at (317)
259-5265 x 44014.

What if my child is late to school?

If a student arrives late to school they must check in to the student services
office or the tardy counter (located in front of the JEL media center) and
receive a tardy pass before being admitted into class. If the student arrives
one hour after class has started, without a parent/guardian contacting the
school, the student will be credited with an unexcused absence, but still must
go to class and stay until the end of the class time. If the student chooses
to leave, this would be considered as truancy. He/she will be referred to the
Assistant to the Director for possible disciplinary action.

For every 3 unexcused tardies, a student will be assessed the equivalent of 1
unexcused absence. This unexcused absence will accrue toward the 4 unexcused
absences that will result in a letter grade deduction. The tardy count will
start over each nine week grading period.
