Noun Suffixes

-ia, -sia, -a, -m, and –ma	usually mean condition, state, or quality  
(the meanings will be used interchangeably)
-is, -sis, -ion, and –ation	Usually mean process, action, or procedeure  
(again used interchangeably)

-y    means either process or condition

-e    sometimes means condition, but more frequently it means agent or 
instruments

-itis    means inflammation

-oma    means tumor

-osis and –iasis    means abnormal condition

-ist or –or (or –tor)    means agent or expert

-ics    means science or study of

-us, -os, -a, -um, -on, and –m (sometimes –ma)    are used to designate 
things, objects, or anatomical parts

-algia  means pain

-ic, -tic, and –ble    mean capable of

-ous and –ose    mean characterized by

NOTE—ose is also a noun suffix (indicates a carbohydrate)
