Why is isn't more of my child's artwork coming home?

The art department holds onto the majority of artwork created over the course
of the year in order to have at least two (and often more) beautiful pieces of
art per child to place in our school's end-of-the-year Art Show/Media Fair. We
are mindful of the fact that parents are eager to display the masterpieces of
their son or daughter, and we make a special effort to send back a few pieces
here and there to help tide families over. Certainly, if a parent or child has
a special need or desire for one of the projects to come home instead of being
held for the art show (for example, if a portrait is created of mom or dad for
a birthday or holiday) then please let Mrs. Sweazy know
and arrangements can be made.

What kind of art is taught in your classes?

Art production, art history, art criticism and aesthetics (the philosophy of
art) are a part of the spiral curriculum of our K-8 art program. A spiral
curriculum is one in which skills, concepts, and thinking dispositions are
developed in the earliest years at age appropriate levels and are
then built upon and made more and more complex and sophisticated as the
curriculum spirals up to the upper grades.

What can I do at home to help develop my child's artistic skills?

Opportunities for art making and art viewing (museums, galleries, Art Beat)
are wonderful for developing your child's creative and visual abilities.
Furthermore, talking about art (your child's or the art of others) with your
son or daughter helps build your child's vocabulary and gives you both the
chance to bond over something imaginative, creative and intellectually
stimulating. Ask your young artist questions about his or her art, be specific
about what you see, and remember to praise and encourage your son or
daughter's art making every chance you get!
