Mrs. Shoulberg's information

Summer, 2012

Dear Parents of incoming first grade students,

I am Gini Shoulberg and I teach 1st grade language arts (reading, creative
writing, spelling, handwriting etc.). I also teach 1st grade religion. I hold
a master's degree in the teaching of reading from the University of Kansas,
amd a master's degree in theology from Loyola University. These two subjects
are favorites of mine and I feel fortuante being able to focus my energy in
these two areas.

Our 1st grade reading program is a very eclectic one, using phonemic
awareness, phonics, sight vocabulary, comprehension, fluency, and the study
of literacy and authors. I am very aware of the diversity of children coming
into the first grade, and I strive to meet them where they are and gently
help them to move forward. My goal is to have each child working at his or
her own pace.

1st grade religion is basically an overview of salvation history, with
stories from the Old and New Testaments, focusing especially on the life and
teachings of Jesus. We stress God's unconditional love for us and the
challenge of Jesus that calls us to love others in the same way.

We celebrate the liturgical seasons of the Church, as well as participating
in and planning some of our weekly all-school masses.

We welcome you to our first grade website and we look forward to meeting you
and your children in August.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me
at shoulberg@saint-johns.net.
