  Reading:  Textbooks that provide both fiction and nonfiction selections
            Teacher Read-Alouds (both picture and chapter books)
            Genre Studies including fairy tales, fantasy, mystery, and poetry
            Monthly Home Reading Goals + April and May Book Projects
            Dr. Seuss Read-In (March)
            Reader's Theater Plays
            Literacy Stations for Read-to-Self, Partner Reading, Word Work,
              and Writing (Individual and Small-Group Instruction)
            Skill Sheets for Word Recognition and Comprehension

  Spelling: Dictation Spelling Sentences
            Skills for proofreading and editing
            Skill sheets for digraphs and vowel combinations

  Writing:  Emphasis on legibility and using lined paper for dictation 
              sentences in manuscript writing.
            Emphasis on developing more independence during writers' workshop
              (especially prewriting, skipping lines on rough drafts, 
              conferencing for revisions in blue ink, self- and peer-editing
              in red ink, and final drafts in ink)
            Second-semester cursive with lowercase letters grouped by type of
              stroke.
