Battle of the Books is meant to be a FUN activity to encourage students to read from different genres. The students are encouraged to read as many of the books on the list as possible so they can answer questions about the books and identify the authors.
There are many ways that the students can become familiar with the books:
-read alone, or with a friend
-listen to an audio book from the public library or another source
-listen to the book read aloud by a teacher, parent, grandparent, or ....
-watch the movie and then read the book OR watch the movie as a reward for reading the book (just remember that often movies are a little bit different. The battle questions will be about the book.)
Battle books may be used for book reports (4th grade) and for classroom language arts activities (5th and 6th grades).
The competitions, or"battles", to answer questions about the books will take place during library class. We will use the CPS (Classroom Participation System) "clickers" for students to repond to multiple choice questions. During each battle, there will be one question about the content of each book, plus questions to identify each author on the list. Again, the goal is to have FUN, and to encourage students to explore books that they might otherwise overlook.
