In the Montessori environment there aren't many papers that come
home with your child. For early three's and four's, many children are
having lessons in the Practical Life and Sensorial Areas. The
Practical Life materials are made up of items you probably have
at home. Some of the lessons given in Practical Life are: pouring
grains, spooning, buttoning, using tongs and washing tables and chairs.
These lessons are important to the development of concentration,
independence, attention span, and coordination. You can help your child at
home by letting them assist you with household chores. The Sensorial area
consists of Montessori materials to help refine your child's five senses:
visual, auditory, tactile, gustatory and olfactory.
The Math and Language Areas are very important and your child will do best
in these areas when attention span and concentration skills are developed.
Math activities will begin with the learning and recognition of the numerals
1-10.
The Language Area begins with the learning and recognition of each letter
and it's sound. In the beginning, the vowels are introduced as short vowel
sounds. Your child may at some point, bring home a workbook. Most children
are very excited to start a workbook and will enjoy showing it to you. We
ask that you return it to school the next day so we may continue to work on
it.
