Homework

Homework can have many benefits for young children.  It can improve remembering and understanding schoolwork.  It can teach them that learning takes place anywhere, not just in the classroom.  Homework can help children in more general ways as well.  It can foster positive character traits such as independence and responsibility.  Homework can teach children how to manage time.  Homework assignments typically have one or more purposes.  The most common purpose is to have children practice material already presented in class.  Practice homework is meant to reinforce learning and help master specific skills.  Preperation homework introduces material that will be presented in future lessons.  These assignments aim to help students learn new material that will be covered in class.  Extenstion homework asks students to apply skills they already have to new situations.

Homework and the purpose of the homework will be explained in more detail once the school year is under way.  In the meantime, it is very important that you read with your child nightly.  Here are some tips in providing a nightly reading routine...

Have your child read aloud to you every night.

Choose a quiet place, free from distraction, to do your nightly reading.

As your child reads, point out spelling patterns.

When your child reads aloud to you and makes a mistake, point out the mistake and help your child read the word correctly.

Ask your child to tell you in his/her own words what the story was about.

As you are reading with your child, stop and ask for thoughts and predictions.
