Dear Families,
Welcome to Chalfant's Children first grade classroom! I'm very excited to
be starting my 12th year of teaching! I look forward to getting to know each
of you and working as partners to help your child be successful. I want to
share a little about myself so you don't feel like you are leaving your child
with a complete stranger:)
I grew up in a small town in Ohio called South Point. We are known for
the "point" at which the three states meet, West Virginia, Ohio, and
Kentucky. I did my undergraduate work at Shawnee State University in
Portsmouth, Ohio and thought, "I am not ready for the real world." So, I
moved home and continued to go to school. I earned my Master's degree in
Early Childhood education from Marshall University (you might have heard of
the movie We Are Marshall). I told my dad I was going to keep going to
school and get my Phd. He said, "you need to get a J-O-B!" so that is what I
did.
I moved to Louisville and worked for Bright Horizons teaching preschool. A
year later I interviewed with Oldham County schools and got a job teaching
kindergarten at Camden Station. That was a life changing move! While
working at Camden Station, our office manager (Ms. Karen, who is now the
Locust Grove office manager) was diagnosed with breast cancer. Following her
surgery I went to her house to visit her and met her son Josh. Long story
short... Ms. Karen is now my mother-in-law and her son Josh is the love of my
life!
We got married a year later and we now have two precious girls and two
beautiful yellow labs! To say the least, I am very blessed (...and Ms. Karen
has been cancer free for several years)!!!! I love to share with my students
and their families stories about Josh, Holly (5, and starting kindergarten),
Emily (3), and our two dogs
Gracie and Simon.
I have an older sister (Jeannie) that lives in Savannah, Georgia with her
husband (Jeff). My parents (Jeff and Nada Alkire) live in Columbus, Ohio but
visit as often as they can. My sister-in-law is "the other Ms. Chalfant"
which sometimes confuses the students. She is a special ed teacher. And you
may know my father-in-law, John Black. He has been very involved in our
community for years.
Well, there you have it... "all about the teacher" in a nutshell! I hope to
build a wonderful partnership with my families! Please know that my door is
always open to you and I am always happy to discuss any questions, concerns
or just sit and chat with you at any time! I check my e-mail often so that
is usually the best and easiest way to quickly communicate.
