KMEA 5th District Fall Meeting

The meeting was called to order at 1:04 pm.

 

Summer Board Meeting Report Highlights

           

·        KMEA authorized the sale of the KMEA mailing list of school addresses only

·        Powers and Duties of State Officers.  The president, in conjunction with KMEA Executive Committee, may authorize any officer, officers, or agent of the Association to enter into a contract or execute and deliver an instrument in the name of and on behalf of the Association.

·        Increased fees for AllState groups

·        Festival Commission Personnel to be revamped

·        Discussion of MS Choral Sight Reading

·        New Band List on KMEA Website for HS Large Group Festival

·        Discussed protocol for Marching Band Judging Changes re: discussions between judges during event.

·        Discussion of heat index and how it affects Marching Band

·        Establish an AllState Treble Chorus at the Junior High Level

·        Motion to nominate Chip Anderson as State Band Chair by Jeff Root from CAL.  Seconded by Scott Brawner from CCHS.

·        Note – No nominations for Choral, General Music, or Collegiate Chairs

 

Nominations for 5th District Offices

·        Motion to nominate Kyle Ray from NOHS as 5th District President Elect, Seconded by Scott Brawner

·        Motion to nominate Tammy Oerther from SEMS to serve as 5th District Middle School Band Chair by Mark Webster from CCMS, seconded by Bob Parker from SOMS.

·        Motion to nominate Chip Anderson as 5th District Band Chair Elect by Bob Parker from SOMS, seconded by Scott Brawner from CCMS

·        Motion to nominate Haley Reed from SOMS as 5th District General Music Chair Elect by Jeff Roon from CAL, seconded by Bob Parker from SOMS.

·        Motion to nominate Erin Kelley from Taylorsville Elementary as 5th District Elementary School Music Teacher of the Year by Peggy Picket, seconded by Erin Pavolko from Spencer Co. Middle.

·        Motion to nominate Haley Reed from SOMS as 5th District Middle School Teacher of the Year by Kathy Leibig from East Oldham Middle, seconded by Kevin Cox from East Oldham Middle

·        Motion to nominate Paul Shepherd from NorthBullittHigh School as 5th District High School Teacher of the Year by Justin Romney North Bullitt, seconded by Bob Parker from SOMS.

·        Motion to nominate Melody Welch as 5th District Friend of Music by Kyle Ray from NOMS, seconded by Mary McGillen from Shelby Co.

·        Motion to nominate Ed Downs from SpencerCo.Middle School as 5th District Administrator of the Year by Erin Pavolko from SpencerCo.Middle School, seconded Picket Picket from SpencerCo.High School.

 

Budget Report

·        No budget report submitted, treasurer absent due to serving his country.

 

New Business

·        Choir Division Info:

o       Festival Manager will ENFORCE ALL DEADLINES AND FESTIVAL RULES!!

·        Joe Stites – KMEA president

o       Push to get involved at the local level

o       State Officers must get started by serving in local districts first

o       Festival Commission proposes to form a seven member committee consisting of the three state division chairs, three festival managers – one each from band, choir and orchestra, and the chair of the festival managers to consider policies and procedures for festivals.  See article in Bluegrass Music News outlining proposal.

o       National Organization – MENC – serves as advocate and lobbyist to the US Secretary of Education on behalf of Music in the Schools. 

o       KDE Program develops Assessment Teams including Arts Program Evaluation Committee.

·        Melissa Skaggs – KMEA

o       Conference details on-line to help rationalize to administrations for PD credit.

o       Online conference registration for 2010 is active so teachers can request PD funds now before they have been used.

o       Congratulations to Haley Reed from SOMS and Brad Rogers from OCHS for having performing groups selected to perform at KMEA Conference

·        Bob Parker – Central Kentucky Band Festival Manager

o       Let him know if there is anything from last year that needs to be addressed with band festivals to improve the events.

·        Brad Rogers – State Band Chair

o       See email about changes to All State Audition Music and Procedures.  Schools will need to purchase List of Etude and Method books.  Pieces to be selected from books.  Exact pieces released to each director upon completion of school registration.

HS Band All District/All State Round 1 Auditions – Nov. 17 at Henry Co. HS

MS Band All District Auditions – Nov. 21 at Shelby Co. East MS.  Use Set C Music

HS Band All State Round 2 Auditions – December 12 at JohnHardinHigh School

MS and HS All District Band Clinic – January 8th and 9th at UofL

Band Solo and Ensemble Festival – February 27th at EastOldhamMiddle School

Band Large Group Festival – March 30th and 31st at OldhamCountySchoolsArtsCenter.
