One planet, eh?

That's right.  Despite all the scientific advancements humankind has made so far, we still only have planetary home...a little green and blue ball we call Earth.  Earth has given us a lot over the years, basically everything needed for the survival of the human species (and all other species on this planet) and much much more.  For a long time, humans lived side-by-side with nature, never using more than they needed and respecting the Earth as a gift-giver rather than an endless supply of resources.  Since then, however, humans have changed the way they look at their planet, their only home, and have to a large extent, abused the earth and the resources it gives us every second of our existence.  So now we are faced with a simple question:  Do we keep taking and taking and taking until there is nothing left on this planet or do we take a stand and give back to the earth in order to save our the only planet we call home?  This is what the One Planet Club is all about.  Have more questions?  Please see the FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) below to find out more information about how you can play a part in helping our one planet.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs):

1. What is the One Planet Club?

The One Planet Club is an student/teacher-based group devoted to ensuring we are all playing a part in protecting and preserving our planet (remember, it’s the only one we have).

2.  So what does OPC do exactly?

Hmmm…well, since we are just starting out our mission is kind of open-ended right now.  Our initial goal is to set up a recycling program all students and faculty can participate in at North Oldham Middle School.  In addition to this goal, we need to educate students and staff on why recycling is important and very much needed as a regular practice both at school and at home.  Other activities will be determined by club members and Mr. Duvall.  Weekly meetings will include a variety of activities such as

·         sorting and collecting recyclables from various locations throughout the school

·         learning more about our planet and the ways we can help protect it through newspaper/magazine articles, DVDs, and group discussions

·         creating an online newsletter/blog featuring photos, articles, and other information about the OPC and its progress

3.  Okay, so now that I know a little bit more about the OPC, how exactly do I join?

That’s easy!  Just come visit Mr. Duvall before or after-school and tell him you are interested.  Meeting times will be posted on the 8th grade bulletin board right outside Mr. Duvall’s room as well as his TeacherWeb site under “One Planet Club”.  You can also send me an email letting me know you are interested in helping to make a difference.  Just send an email with the words "One Planet Club" in the subject line to stephen.duvall@oldham.kyschools.us.

Thanks for stopping by!
