Flag Football
Introduction
Flag football can be enjoyed by everyone. It includes running, throwing,
catching, jumping, etc. The most important part of the game is the team's
strategy. No tackling or blocking is allowed.
History
American football has been played since the mid 1800's. The first college
game was between Princeton and Rutgers in 1869.The professional game has been
played in some form since 1895.
Touch football began in the 1930's and flag football was played in the early
1940's as a recreational sport for military personal. Rec leagues began in
the late 1940's and early 1950's.
St. Louis is the birthplace of the first national flag football organization,
called The National Touch Football Association. It was formed in the 1960's
and has played a national championship since 1971.
In 1997, the Professional Flag Football League was formed and in 1999 they
traveled to several large cities to play other teams.
Rules
The game is started with a coin flip. Winner takes possesion of the ball at
the 20 yard line and the loser of the coin toss has choice of end zones.
The offensive team has 4 plays to make it to midfield. Once they do they have
four more downs to score a touchdown. If we play indoors then you only have 4
downs to score. If the offense fails to score then the defensive team takes
over wherever the offensive team ended with the ball.
After the ball is snapped by the center to the quarterback the team has 7
seconds to pass the ball. The center cannot run with the ball. A quarterback
cannot run with the ball past the line of scrimmage, unless he hands off the
ball and it has been returned to him/her or if the defense has counted to
1,000-7. All players who rush the quarterback must count 1-1000, 2-1000, 3-
1000, 4-1000, 5-1000, 6-1000, 7-1000, before they can rush the quarterback.
All defensive players are able to rush once the ball has been handed off or
tossed. The ball is spotted where the ball carrier's feet are placed when
the flag is pulled, not where the ball is.
All offensive players are able to receive passes(including the QB if the ball
has been handed off or tossed behind the line of scrimmage). After a pass has
been intercepted, the defense now becomes the offense at the spot where the
interception was made. An interception can also be returned for a touchdown.
Once the ball carrier has crossed the line of scrimmage, the ball cannot be
handed off, tossed, pitched or passed in any way.
Interceptions change the possession of the ball. If it is intercepted in the
endzone and the play is dead the ball will be placed at the 20 yard line. If
the ball carrier tries to run it out of the end zone then wherever they lose
a flag is where the ball will be placed.
There are no fumbles in flag football. The ball is spotted whereever it the
ball left the offensive player's hands and the ball is considered to be dead.
6 points are awarded for a touchdown and 1 point for trying to reach the end
zone after the touchdown is scored.
A safety results in 2 points. This means deflagging the offensive team while
they are in the other team's end zone.
Make sure you know how to define offense and defense.
Also name 2 locomotor and 2 non-locomotor skills used in flag football.
Pickleball
History
Pickleball was started in 1965 on Bainbridge Island near Seattle, Wa. U.S.
Congressmen Joe Pritchard, William Bell, and Barney McCallum invented the
game so the entire family could play. People started playing it on their
driveways and dead end streets. Then in the mid 1970's it started being a
formalized game being played indoors at rec centers, universities and health
clubs.
The net is 3 feet high and the court dimensions are very similar to a doubles
badminton court.
Rules
The serve must be underhand and diagonal. The receiver must let it bounce
before they hit it. Then once the receiving team returns it the serving team
must also let it bounce. Then either team may volley it as long as they do
not go into the non volley zone. Each team gets two faults, one per player.
Some examples of faults are hitting the serve into the net, hitting the ball
out of bounds, not serving it underhand or diagonally and not returning the
serve. You can only score if you are the serving team. You play to 15 points
and you must win by 2 points. It is also the best 2 out of 3 games.
Ultimate Frisbee
History
Frisbee started with the FRISBIE Baking Co. of Bridgeport,Conn. They baked
pies for alot of the New England Colleges and the students quickly realized
that the pie tins could easily be thrown and caught.
In 1948, Walter Frederick Morrison created the first plastic frisbee.
In 1957, he created what was called the Pluto Platter and sold it to be mass
produced by Wam-0. This is when they changed the spelling to frisbee. In
1967, high school students from Maplewood, NJ. invented the game of ultimate
frisbee. Ultimate frisbee is a noncontact sport that requires alot of speed,
agility and endurance. It combines the sports of football, basketball,
soccer and netball. In the early 1970's freesyle frisbee was started. You
would have a team of two or three people and perform a routine with the
frisbee(s) for a panel of judges.
In 1977, Frisbee golf was also created.
Rules
You can only take 3 steps
One person on the fribee at a time
No handoffs in the endzone
Touchdowns are worth 6 points
Locomotor-running, jumping, leaping
Non-locomotor- turning, twisting, pivoting, throwing
Also know 2 health related and 2 skill related fitness components used in
Ultimate Frisbee.
Speedball Notes
Speedball was developed by E.D. Mitchell at the University of Michigan in
the 1920's.
It is an aerobic game and it is a cobination of soccer, basketball and
football.
It can be played outdoors and indoors.
When it is outdoors you play with 11 players.
When it is indoors you play with 7 players.
The typical net size is 18 feet wide.
Each game starts with a tip-off at midcourt.
The ball can then be advanced by dribbling(both hands and feet),throwing,
rolling, kicking, tapping, passing and heading.
You can score by shooting a basket= 3 points, by catching the ball in the
opponent's end zone= 1 point, throwing the ball into the soccer goal for 2
points, kicking the ball in the goal for 1 point, and heading the ball in
the goal for 4 points.
The goalie may use any part of their body to block the ball. In front of
each goal is an area called the CREASE. This is the light wood area and no
one from the other team can enter this area. If they do then it will result
in a penalty shot.
When a goal is scored, the team scored against immediately puts the ball in
play.
If a defensive player goes into the CREASE without possesion of the ball, it
results in a penalty shot.
If the ball is on the ground you may dribble it with your feet for as long
as you want, but if you want to use your hands you must convert it by
kicking it to another player, off the wall or to yourself. Then you make
take 3 basketball dribbles, take 3 steps, shoot or pass the ball.
If you do not convert it first then it will result in a penaly shot for the
other team.
Badminton Notes
Badminton is a very aerobic game. It is good for your cardiovscular
endurance.
It uses non locomotor skills of swinging , swaying, twisting, & turning.
It uses locomotor skills such as running and jumping.
The game began in Ancient China.
The modern version we know today started in 1873 in India. The British
soliders were playing the game and the called it poona. It is also became
an Olympic sport in 1992.
Badminton is similar to tennis in that you start the game with a serve from
the right service court into the court diagonally from the server or when
your opponent has an even number of points.
In badminton you must serve up closer and it must be underhand. In doubles
both servers will serve before it switches to the opponent's serve. Also,
you can only score a point when you are actually serving. You will play to
15 points and you must win by 2. In a regular match it is the best 2 out of
3 games. You also must return the shuttle in one hit, meaning your partner
can not assist you in getting the shuttle over the net.
The length of the court is 22 feet and the width is 17 feet. A regulation
net is 5 feet high.
A let is when some form of interference occurs and the point is replayed.
A fault is when you miss your serve or you do not get the shuttle back over
the net.
Types of Shots
Forehand
Backhand
Smash-which is equal to an overhead in tennis or a spike in volleyball
Clear- is a defensive stroke that goes high and deep in the back court
Drop shot- is used when your opponent is in the backcourt and you want to
barely get the ball just dropping over the net.
Team Handball Notes
The game is played with 6 full court players and 1 goalie.
The object of the game is to throw the ball past the goalie from behind the
3 point line.
Team Handball developed out of 3 different sports from the countries of
Germany, Denmark and Czechoslovakia. These sports started off using their
feet as in soccer then decided to use their hands instead.
Team Handball is a combination of soccer, basketball, and handball.
It became an olympic sport in 1936 at the Munich games.
Unforunately, because of World War II Team Handball was not revived in the
olympics again until 1972.
In 1972, the olympic games were held in Munich.
The Israeli team was kidnapped and later killed by terrorists.
Team Handball became an olympic sport for women in 1976.
Rules
The beginning of the game starts with a jump ball just like in basketball.
You have 3 dribbles.
You have 3 seconds to get rid of the ball.
You can take 3 steps before and after you dribble the ball.
The goalie is the only person allowed inside the 3 point line.
The goalie can use their entire body to block the ball. Everyone else can
only use their hands.
You can run plays, set screens and build a wall.
You can jump in the air to take a shot behind the 3 point line but you must
release the ball before your feet land inside of the 3 point line. Just like
a 3 point shot in basketball.
If you go into the 3 point line it is a penalty shot for the other team.
If you double dribble or take too many steps it results in a free throw for
the other team. This will occur wherever the violation happened.
Eclipse Ball Notes
The game is started with a forehand as one would use playing tennis. Once
the ball goes over the net the other team must return it. If the ball
bounces more than 2 times then a point is awarded to the other team. Also,
if the same person hits the ball two times in a row, it is called a double-
hit. A point is then awarded to the other team. The first team to score 15
points and be ahead by 2 points is the winning team. The boundaries are the
half court line, baseline and the last black line at the back of the court.
You must rotate as you would in volleyball. If the ball hits the rafters
then you can play it, but it has to land on your side of the court. If it
lands on the other side, then that team gets a point.
Tennis skills used in the game are the forehand, backhand, volley and
overhead. Skill related fitness componets are speed, agility, coordination,
balance and power.
Play it means that you are playing a ball that the opponent hit out-of-
bounds. If you win that point the your team is awarded 2 points.
Volleyball Notes
History
William Morgan invented volleyball in 1895 in Massachusetts. He used the
inside of a basketball for the ball. He also used tennis nets. Now the
height of the net for women is 7"4 and 1/4 inch. The men's height is 8 feet.
Rules
You can not have more than than 3 hits when getting the ball over the net. A
block does not count as a hit. If the same person hits the ball 2 times in a
row, it is called a double hit. This results in a point for the other team.
If you make contact with the net at anytime, it is a point for the other
team. If the ball lands on the line it is considered in and the other team
gets a point. If the ball hits the rafters and goes over the net, it is a
point for the other team. If you miss a serve it is a point for the other
team.
There are 6 players on the court for each team. 3 in the front row and 3 in
the back row. You rotate when your team wins the serve. This is called a
side out. Each time the ball is put in play a point is scored. This is
called rally scoring.
In order to win a game you must score 25 points and win by 2 points. In
order to win a match you must win 2 out of 3 games.
Vocab
Foream pass(bump)- make sure your feet are spread shoulder width a part,
that your hands are interlocked and that the ball is contacted on the
forearms. Do not swing your arms.
Setting-pretend you are drinking from a 2 liter and spread your fingers a
part and make sure your thumbs are back. Then contact the ball only on your
fingers and follow through. Again make sure your feet are shoulder width
apart.
Serving- this can be underhand or overhand. Make sure on the
underhand that
you make a half fist and contact it on your palm. On the overhand make sure
you toss the ball with the opposite hand and that it is higher than the net.
Then make sure you open your hand and contact the ball above the net. If
you step on the line, it will de a fault and the other team will get a point.
Spiking- (Overhand Hit)use a 3 step approach and jump off of two feet. Make
sure you reach
high, contact the ball with your hand and follow through.
Dig- is when you make a play on a spike.
Block-is when you jump off both feet and defend the spike.
Ace- is when you serve the ball and no one touches ir or the other team
shanks it out of bounds.
Kill- is when you spike the ball and no ones touches it or they shank it out
of bounds.
Object Maipulation- is when you control the ball and you can make it do what
you want. Be able to give me 3 examples in volleyball.
Be able to name at least 2locomotor and non-locomotor movements as well.
Bowling Notes
Bowling started as far back as the Ancient Egyptians.
It became popular in the 1840's in the U.S.
Abraham Lincoln enjoyed bowling. In fact there is a bowling alley in the
White House.
Vocabulary
Strike is worth 10 points plus whatever you roll on the next 2 balls.
Spare is worth 10 points and whatever you get on your next roll.(1 ball)
Split is where you leave two pins that are not next to each other.
Gutterball is when the ball rolls down the gutter and off the playing area.
Foul is when you step over the foul line and it results in a 0 for that turn.
A perfect game is a 300.
A beginning bowler who can get 120 is considered good.
For professional bowlers anything over 200 is considered good.
Also you will be scoring 2 games so make sure you know how to score a
complete game. Now is the time to ask me in class.
Basketball Notes
James Naismith invented basketball in 1891, in Springfield, Mass.
He used 2 peachbaskets as the goals and he used a soccer ball.
There are 5 positions, 2 guards, 2 forwards, and 1 center.
A field goal is when a basket is scored. It can be either a two pointer or a
three pointer.
A free throw is worth 1 point and you shoot these when you are fouled.
A double dribble occurs when a player dribbles the ballwith two hands or
when they pick up their dribble and start dribbling again.
A travel occurs when you walk with the baketball.
In high school and middle school you play 4 quarters.
In college you play 2 20 minute halves.
On defense you can play a zone or man to man. In a zone you guard a certain
area and in a man to man you guard a particular player.
For 6th grade, you will have to tell me 2 locomotor and 2 non-locomotor
skills that you use while playing basketball.
For 7th/8th, you will have to explain 3 skill related fitness components and
2 health related fitness components and how they relate to basketball.
Also know the proper techniques for dribbling, passing, and shooting.
