SMATH Team 2009 - 2010

Thank you for your interest in the 2009 - 2010 NOMS Smath Team! This club is for any student grades 6 - 8 that has or wants to develop a passion for science and math. Smath Team is a combination of 7 different activities that our students can join. Some have a few select spots because they are competitive teams, while others are open to any student that wants to participate! Some teams will have registration fees, but the amount will depend on the number of students. I have calculated these on the maximum number of students participating. If we have less than that number, the fee will increase but I don’t forsee this happening. Please see the information below for details and email me if you have any questions.

Just for FUN!

Smath Expo

Open to: All 6th – 8th Graders

Fee: None

Description: The NOMS Smath Expo is a math and science fair where students showcase an independent investigation that they have worked on throughout the year. This involves conducting research, designing and carrying out an experiment, and creating a visual display. Students will showcase their work in May - parents will be invited to attend! We will meet once a month to work on the projects, so this will require outside work time. See the Smath Expo link on my website for more info.

Math Counts Club

Open to: All 6th – 8th Graders

Fee: $15 – includes all materials, breakfasts, and Math Counts t-shirt

Description: This is a math club that focuses on creative problem solving. Club meetings will be held on the first Friday of the month at 7:15 AM. Breakfast will be provided. There is also a Math Counts competition team - info is listed below. NOTE: Students on the competition team must attend club meetings, but do not have to pay the $15 fee unless they want another t-shirt.

Competition Teams

Louisville Regional Science Fair

Open to: All 6th – 8th Graders, but we only have about 30 spots. We will have to have try-outs if there are more than 30 students interested.

Fee: $5 for registration + cost of materials for your project

Description: Students conducting an independent investigation may choose to compete with their project at LRSF on March 13th. Deadline for entry to the fair in is January. There are a limited number of students that I can send - 3 for each category, and one team project. This is an intensive competition and will require a large amount of outside work time, but is well worth it!

Future Cities (Sponsored by National Engineering Week)

Open to: 8th Graders in Accelerated Science. Competition spots for this year are already full, but a group of students go do FC for the Smath Expo for fun if they want! The competition team would also appreciate help from any students who are interested – especially if you like making models and are arty!

Fee: None, other than transportation to state competition at UK.

Description: The team will need to have a strong writer, artist/designer/engineer, and technology expert. All team members need to have exceptional public speaking skills. There is no fee for Future Cities, other than the expense of building the model which cannot exceed $100 as a team. 7th grade students in Accelerated Science will complete the Future City project for class, and be eligible to compete in 2010-2011 as 8th graders. The state competition is held at the University of Kentucky School of Engineering in January. The winning team receives an all-expense paid trip to compete at nationals in Washing DC in February.

Science Olympiad (Sponsored by Texas Instruments, DuPont, Center for Disease Control, and others)

Open to: 45 Accelerated Science students – grades 6 – 8

Fee: $30 + transportation to competitions

Description: A Science Olympiad team is composed of up to fifteen students for Divisions B (Grades 6 - 8). We can compete with 3 teams, so we have 45 open spots for students in Accelerated Science. Science Olympiad events are designed to use a variety of intellectual and practical skills. Some events require a quick recall of specific facts, while others require concept development, a process skill, or an application of a specific concept. Some events require general knowledge while others require a specific skill.

Middle School Science Bowl (Sponsored by the Department of Energy)

Open to: 14 7th and 8th graders in Accelerated Science

Fee: Transportation to regionals in West Virginia. Bus fee + hotel room. Plan on about $50.

Description: Team selection will be determined by science knowledge (factual rather than conceptual) and quick recall skill/experience. This competition is basically a science and math quick recall. Students will need to be available for the regional tournament in West Virginia in February of 2010. If we place first, the 5-member winning team will receive an all-expense paid trip to nationals, which is usually in Washington, DC and held in late April, early May. Students will be transported to WV via bus and will be responsible for the expense of that trip, and a team t-shirt (around $20).

Fee: $50 (includes access to problem database, registration fees for chapter competition, and Math Counts t-shirt)

Description: Math Counts is a math problem solving competition team. Eight NOMS students are eligible to compete - 4 as a team and 4 as individuals. 2 spots are open on the team to students enrolled in both 8th grade Accelerated Science and Geometry. 4 spots are open to 7th and 8th graders enrolled in Accelerated Science and math (Algebra I or Geometry). Students may not compete in both team and individual events. Due to the difficulty of the problems, this team is open to Accelerated Math and Science students only.
