What classes will I take at OCMS?
OCMS has 4 nine-week grading periods. Students will take
Language Arts,
Math, Science, Social Studies, Primetime and Wellness. In
addition,
students will be
exposed to a variety of Related Arts classes including Art,
Practical
Living, Physical Education, Computers, Humanities, Music and
either Band or
Chorus. Students in Band or Chorus will have fewer opportunities
to take other Related Arts classes.
When do I get my class schedule?
Schedules will be given to the students during 6th Grade
Orientation or Back
to School Night.
Do I get my own locker?
Every student has his/her own locker and combination. A $5
locker use fee
is charged at the beginning of the school year.
What do I need the first day of school?
Students will need pencil and paper on the first day of school
along with
their lunch or lunch money. School supply lists will be mailed
to homes the
end of July in the opening of school packets and available on the
OCMS website.
What time does school begin and end?
OCMS students have to be in their 1st period class at 8:30 a.m.
and are
dismissed beginning at 3:24 p.m.
How much time do I have between classes?
All students have three minutes between classes.
Do I have the same teacher all day?
For the most part, you will have a different teacher and room
for each class.
What do I need for Physical Education?
Students are required to �dress out� for P.E. Students MUST
wear tennis
shoes, gym shorts and a gym type shirt (t-shirt). It is
possible that
students may be required to purchase a P.E. �uniform�
(shorts/shirt) for the
year.
When do we eat lunch and what will our lunches cost?
Student lunches are currently $2.00. You will go to lunch with
your class
and will be required to sit at assigned tables
Can I participate in sports?
Students at OCMS can participate in all sports offerings. Some
of these
include interscholastic basketball, track, cross country, golf,
soccer,
tennis, girl�s volleyball, cheerleading and dance team. OCMS
offers a
comprehensive intramural program for every student wishing to
participate.
Does OCMS have a "Sick" room?
We prefer to call it a "Health" room. Students too ill to
remain in class
will be permitted to report to the health room for monitoring.
Parents will
be contacted to take them home if their condition does not
improve. In
addition, a district nurse is available one day each week.
Is there a dress code at OCMS?
Yes. Students are expected to be appropriately attired for
school.
Headwear (hats, bandanas, etc.), sleeveless tops, tops exposing
midriff, and
other similar items are not to be worn during school hours.
Clothing with
pictures and/or print that may be deemed unsuitable for school
(e.g.
promotions of drug or alcohol use) is strictly prohibited.
Items of
underwear, thermal or otherwise, such as boxer shorts, may not
be worn as
outer garments. Torn clothing, see-through clothing or clothing
that has
holes is also prohibited. Patches must be sewn on the outside of
clothing.
No chains, dog collars or jewelry deemed dangerous or
inappropriate may be
worn. A copy of any additions to the dress code will be mailed
home in July.
Will I have classes with my friends?
Yes and No. All of your core classes will be with your team
members, but
you will be with other students during your related arts
classes. With the
number of classes students have, we are sure you will know
someone.
What fees will I have to pay?
OCMS students may be required to pay a basic fee for
instructional
materials. A small fee may be charged for some of the Related
Arts
classes. Band students must furnish their own instruments or
pay a rental
fee. Students may elect to purchase school accident insurance.
When do we eat lunch and what will our lunches cost?
Student lunches are currently $2.00. You will go to lunch with
your class
and will be required to sit at assigned tables.
What bus will I ride?
The bus schedule is published in the Oldham Era approximately
two weeks
before school begins. If you have questions after the first
day, please ask
your teacher.
What should I do when I am absent?
Parents should call the school before 9:00 a.m. on the day of
the absence.
Students may accumulate a total of eight (8) full day absences
per year.
Physician�s authorization or other credible proof will be
required for each
subsequent absence beyond the eight day limit. Upon returning
to school,
students MUST present a written note to the attendance clerk,
signed by a
parent, guardian or physician explaining the nature and dates of
the
absence. This written explanation is required regardless of
phone contact.
What in school activities can students participate in?
Students can participate in numerous clubs and teams such as
Beta Club,
Yearbook, Art Club, Geography Bee, Academic Teams, Drama Club
and Fellowship
of Christian Athletes.
Does OCMS have vending machines?
Yes. By law, the vending machines can not be turned on until the
end of the school day. At 3:30 students mya purchase healthy
snacks and water or juice from our vending machines.
Can students chew gum at school?
No. Gum chewing is NOT allowed at OCMS.
