READING
Houghton Mifflin Reading provides a wide variety of award-winning stories that
meet different instructional needs. Phonics, vocabulary, comprehension,
spelling, and writing are incorporated in the daily lessons that accompany
each story. Please have your child read the story of the week with you.
(Reading the story aloud will be assigned on certain nights so check
assignment notebooks.)
SPELLING NEWS
Words Their Way
Through active exploration, Words Their Way teaches students to examine words
to discover the regularities, patterns, and conventions of the written English
language needed to read and spell. In addition, it increases specific
knowledge of words –the spelling and meaning of individual words. Overall,
word study will teach your child how to look at words so they can construct an
ever-deepening understanding of how written words work.
Each week your child will study a new spelling feature and a set of spelling
words to enhance the learning process of that specific spelling feature.
Please have your child practice sorting the words found in the envelope at the
back of your child’s planner. Our spelling schedule will begin a new group of
words to study on Mondays, activities throughout the week, ending with an
assessment on Friday.
MATH Copies of the multiplication tables will be given to each student.
We will start with the 2's and move through the family of facts
until we reach the 12's. Daily drills and using flash cards at
home can help achieve success. We are also learning to count
money, making change, using a calendar and reading about elapsed
time.
