Homework

We are reading our fifth book. Read "Olivia". Listen to your
child read the story aloud nightly and initial that you have heard it. Ask
your child questions about the story. Study the new vocabulary words:
always, mother, father, try, firm, supposed, love, Joan, and both. Have them
use each word in an oral sentence Your child should be able to read the
words in 3 seconds each.

The students now both read and answer the test questions by themselves. We
also read and take a test on a "cold read" story each week. This is a story
the students have not seen before, but it uses the vocabulary and decoding
skillsfrom Olivia and all of our previous stories. This nine weeks the "Cold
read" story is for practice; it will be graded last nine weeks.

I will test the students on the vocabulary from Unit 4 and highlight in the
notebook any words that were missed.

Your child is expected to read at least 23 words per minute by now. Please
listen to your child read aloud to you for 15-20 minutes each night. Your
chld should be reading fluently and with expression.

Give your child a practice spelling test Monday and work on any words that
are missed. A practice test will be given Thursday and a test will be given
Friday. Backward letters are counted wrong, so be sure your child writes
each word correctly. This week's words are: low, row, boat, coat, no, go,
puppy, funny, mother and father.

Play Compare, Double Compare, or Collect 15 each night with your child. Your
child should be able to write to 100 correctly and to read the number words
one-twelve. They should also be able to count to 100 by 1s, 2s, 5s, and 10s.
Your child will have math homework this week. We are learning to tell time
to the hour and half hour and use a calendar this week.

Please play the Frog Kit game nightly and return it to school on Thursday.
