                              Beginner Band

Beginner band is made up of students with very little or no experience. It
is designed to introduce students to instrumental expression of music at a
rudimentary level by providing the knowledge of and/or performance in the
following areas: (a) quality and richness of tone, (b) range, (c) musical
notation, (d) rhythmic ability and understanding, (e) reading skill, (f)
expressive technique and (g) facility and control in fingering technique.

Students are to wear school uniforms for any performances.
STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO ATTEND ALL PERFORMANCES.***If a student cannot
attend a performance, a note from the parent must be sent to Mr. Costilow a
week before the performance is to take place.***

All students are on a probation for the 1st nine(9) weeks. If no interest or
ability is shown after the 1st or 2nd nine week session, parents will be
notified by Mr. Costilow and advised as to whether their child should
continue band classes.

Band may be dropped with written permission of parents. A student must stay
in band for the remainder of the year if not dropped at the end of the 1st
or 2nd nine weeks.

BAND MAY NOT BE DROPPED DURING THE 3RD OR 4TH NINE WEEK PERIOD.

Students will be graded on practice charts, pass-off exercises from the

Abney Elementary Beginner Band Program does own a few school instruments.
These instruments are issued to students by a drawing. For each instrument
that a student signs up for, their name goes into a container and our
principal Mr. Alford draws out a student name. That student is then issued a
school instrument to use for the year.

If your child's name is not drawn, then it is up to the parent to see about
renting an instrument from a reliable music store. Listed below are music
stores where instruments can be rented:

Christy's Music Slidell Music C&M Music Lanier Music
831 Robert Blvd. 1563 Gause Blvd. 1727 N. Causeway 2025 HWY. 59
Slidell Slidell Mandeville Mandeville
641-6175 643-3373 626-3920 674-3399

Make sure each store offers a variety of services(repair, rental/purchase,
upgrade program and private lessons).

If you need instruments repaired, the following are reliable repair shops.

        Tom Barbry Christy's Music
        Slidell Slidell
        641-9003 641-6175

If a student wants to use an instrument that has been in the family, that is
perfectly fine. However, if it is a woodwind, it should be checked for
leaks, cracks and its pads by a reliable repair technician. Brass
instruments need to have all slides working freely as well as the valve
pistons.
