Reading

1.ancestors- people from whom one is descended.
Your ancestors are people who were members of your family before the present generation. 

2. numerous -many
A group of people or things is numerous if there are many of them. After numerous tries Sally finally made the soccer team. 

3. segregation - the practice of separating one racial group from another.
Segregration is the separation of people or things. In America segregation meant separating people by color, making one group use different schools, restaurants, stores, and seats on the bus.

4. unsuspecting- not aware; not suspecting
To be unsuspecting is to be trusting. The happy puppy was unsuspecting that he was going to the vet. How is unsuspecting different from being cautious? 
5. avoided
6. injustice - unfairness, an unjust act. 
If an injustice takes place, something unfair has been done. Not allowing women to vote until 1920 was an injustice to women. What is an antonym for injustice?
Questions: 
1. Why do you think the author wrote about the childhood experiences of her brother?
2. Reread the last two pages of "My Brother Martin".What does the author mean when she says that her brother's dream "turned the world upside down"? 
3. Suppose you had met Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. when he was a child. What character traits would you both have in common. Use story details to help you answer the question.
4. Why is it important to correct injustice? Use story details and your own experience to support your answer.

Other Words to Think About:
waning - becoming smaller or fewer in number.
streetcar - a vehicle that holds many people and runs through city streets.
indignity something that insults a person's self respect
bigotry hatred or intolerance toward an entire group of people; injustice.
activist - a person who supports a cause.
unconstitutional - not in keeping with the constitution of a country state, or group.
nonviolence means not using physical force to express anger or disappointment.  How can you solve a difficult situation by using nonviolence?
