Students will begin the school year by bringing an individual snack each
day.
In September, each child will be assigned a day on the calendar within theeir
folders to bring snack for the entire class. There are 22 students
currently in our room so please send enough for every student in class. The
date for your child to bring the snack is highlighted on the calendar in your
child's folder. The class snack bag goes home the day before as a reminder
along with a notebook for you to help your child write something they enjoyed
that evening. Then we will read the story the next morning. If the bookbag is
at your home, please try to send it back to school the next day.
I want to take this opportunity to explain the kindergarten report cards.
The first quarter is only the social development of the child. The 2nd, 3rd,
and 4th quarters address academics as well as the social growth. Some
areas are tested in only the 3rd and 4th nine week periods since they are not
covered beforehand, such as time and money.
Each of the second, third, and fourth quarters test things such
as letter recognition, sound recognition, number recognition, words that
begin with the same sound, sight words, writing their names correctly,
counting, and using phonetic sounds for developmental spelling in words and
sentences. These are tested each nine weeks but are scored differently each
time. For instance, in recognizing capital letters the student only needs to
recognize 13 or more letters to receive a +, 8-12 letters for a check mark,
and a - if less than 8 letters are recognized in the second quarter. But
in the third quarter, the student must recognize 20 or more letters for a
+, 13-19 letters for a check, and 0-12 for a - mark. In the fourth quarter,
a + is only for recognizing all 26 capital letters, a checkmark is for
20-25 letters, and a - is for 0-19 letters. These standards also apply to
lower case letters and to recognizing letter sounds.
For rhyming words, in the second period a student must give at least 4-5
rhymes for a +, for a check mark he/she must give 2-3 rhymes, and a - is for
0-1 rhyming words given. The third and fourth quarters, the child must give
5 rhyming words for a +, 3-4 words for a check mark, and 0-2 for a -.
Identifying words beginning with the same sound is scored as follows: 2nd
quarter a + is given for 6-10 words correct, a check for 3-5, and a - for 0-
4. In the third quarter, 8-10 are needed for a +, 5-7 for a check, and 0-4
for a - mark. The last quarter, all 10 are needed for a +, 8-9 for a check,
and less than 8 is a - mark.
Sight words are scored in the second quarter as recognizing 10 or more is
+, 5-9 as a check, 0-4 is a -. The third quarter, the student mus recognize
20 or more for the +, 15-19 for a check, and 0-14 is a -. The fourth quarter,
the child needs to recognize 30 or more sight words for the +, 20-29 for a
check mark, and 0-19 for a -.
Phonetical spelling is assessed by having the student sound out and write
3 letter words such as "dog" (this is not one of the words). If the student
can write more than the beginning letter sound, he/she recisves a + in the
second quarter, a check for just the beginning sound, and a - if no beginning
sounds are written. In the third quarter, the child must write more than the
beginning and ending sounds for the +, a check for the beginning and ending
sounds with no middle sound, and a - if no ending sounds are given. The
fourth quarter, the child receives a + if all 3 sounds are written, a check
if beginning and ending sounds are given and a - if no middle sound is given.
For counting objects to 20, in the second quarter the student must count
more than 5 objects for a +, a check mark for 5 objects and a - for less than
5. The third quarter, the student must count more than 10 objects for a +,
count 10 objects for a check mark, and less than 10 for a - mark. In the last
quarter, the studnt needs to count more than 20 objects for a +, a check mark
for 20 objects, and a minus if less than 20 objects are counted.
In identifying numerals 0-20 in the second quarter, the student must
identify more than 5 numerals for a +, a check mark for 5 numerals, and a -
for less than 5. The third quarter, the student needs to identify more than
10 numerals for the +, 10 numerals for a check, and less than 10 is a -. In
the last quarter, the child needs to identify more than 20 numerals for the
+, a check for 20 numerals, and a - is given for identifying less than 20
numerals.
