Getting your child ready for a great education does not have to be difficult. Here are a few tips to help along the journey.
First of all, read, read, read. This is very important, if a child knows the facts about the characters in a story, then the sequence is easier. When you teach your child the ABC song, make sure you say M N O P and do not say and Z. These are some of the main problems with teaching children to read. They do not realize that N exists and they think and is a letter.
Other problems arise in sounds of letters.
Some think that the letter says its name like vowels can do: example....w does not make the sound 'd' first, this is a common mistake.
Others are:
e and i sounds, they are so close
c can make the 's' (soft sound) or 'k' (hard sound), we teach the 'k' sound, and discuss the 's' sound.
g says 'g' (hard sound) as in good, we discuss 'J' (soft sound) as in giraffe.
V is often confused with the sound of f by children.
They also thing y says "w"
Please practice as much as possible at home.
MATH
Count everything! Count the red cars while driving for example. Sort silverware, shirts, pants, toys. Make patterns (ie. AB, ABC, AABB, AABC, ABBC), use pencils, coins (we have to know penny, nickle and dime anyway). Use words like tomorrow, tonight, this morning, to help with the concept of time passing. Play some if games, I we have a party for 3 people how many sandwiches, drinks, plates, etc. do we need?
