When does the trip usually occur? During the Easter break. Some years this will take place the week before Easter and other years it will take place the week after Easter. It depends on the school calendar.
How many days is the trip? The trip lasts 6 days.
How much does the trip cost? The trip cost approximately $2250.
What does this cost cover? The cost covers everything except for spending money. i.e. Hotel, three meals a day, transportation to New York, transportation in New York, admission to any museums, monuments, or shows, two course leaders, a hotel monitor, a hotel security person at night, and all services needed to set up the trip.
Who chaperones the trip? Dr. Busbee currently represents Boyet as the Boyet chaperone. However, any parent, grandparent or adult relative may chaperone the trip for a fee slightly higher than that of the student.
How is supervision handled at night? During the day? At night there is someone employed by World Strides that patrols the hallway. If at any time a student tries to leave the room, or the students become out of hand in their room, Dr. Busbee is immediately contacted.
During the day, students are with Dr. Busbee, any chaperones that may attend, and an employee of World Strides. At no time are students left on their own.
What activities are planned? Are they educational? The entire experience is considered an educational experience. Although some activities might be considered “fun”, World Strides employees do an excellent job of explaining the history and/or importance of all activities. Examples of activities include, but are not limited to: Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Broadway Show, Empire State Building, Trump Towers, NBC Studios, Museum of Natural Science, Central Park, 911 memorial, several historic churches, 5th Avenue, Times Square, and a walk over the Brooklyn Bridge.
How much spending money is needed? This is strictly up to the parent. T-shirts can cost anywhere from $5-$10.
Sweatshirts can cost up to $20. There are also opportunities to buy extra snack foods. You can send your child with as much or as little money as you would like. This is strictly a judgment call.
How are meals provided? Fast food, hotel, etc? Meals are provided in various ways. The food is not generally from typical fast food restaurants. However, some restaurants are still quick and easy foods, similar to a deli. Last year we also ate at Planet Hollywood. Students are generally given at least 3-4 different options.
How do the kids share hotel rooms? Students are placed by gender in rooms of no more than 4 students. Dr.
Busbee will work with students in placing students in each room. Chaperones are placed by gender in rooms of no more than 2 chaperones. A parent can pay an extra fee to have their child be placed in their room.
How many chaperones attend? The number of chaperones attending the trip will change from year to year. There is no limit to the number of chaperones that may attend. On average there is one chaperone to every 2-3 students.
Can I research the company that is in charge of managing the trip? You can find further information at www.worldstrides.org.
How do students raise money for the trip? Students can raise money by holding any fundraiser approved through Dr. Busbee and Mr. Stubbs. However, parents are responsible for conducting the fundraiser.
How much does it cost for a chaperone? The cost for a chaperone is approximately $2560. The cost difference between a student and a chaperone is due to the number of people in a room. If four chaperones were willing to stay in one room, the cost would be the same as the student.
How is the group transported throughout the trip? Approximately 75% of the trip consists of walking to your destination. However, students are transported via coach bus to destinations that are too far to walk to. On occasion, students will also take the subway.
