I am a graduate of Louisiana State University where I received my B.S. and
M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction. I have been teaching in East Baton
Rouge Parish since 1999, earned National Board Certification in 2006, and
was named by my colleagues as Teacher of the Year for the 2005-2006 school
year.
Also, I have collaborated with Big Buddy's Word Play and LSU's Louisiana
Shakespeare Project to develop students writing and speaking skills using
spoken word poetry, expressive writing, and performing arts. I have served
on the district curriculum and testing revision teams and on the school's
Positive Behavior Support Team.
To develop professionally, I have attended workshops in the areas of
collaboration, teaching English/Language Arts and study skills, using
thinking maps, reading intervention, writing across the curriculum for high-
stakes testing, technology instruction, and inclusive classrooms.
Teacher's Note: All my life, I thought singular nouns ending in -s would
only take an apostrophe to show possession - until I became a Lucas and
looked up the rule again. Many grammar sources state that it's best
practice to end all singular nouns with an -'s to show possession (some say
depending on the pronunciation, others on the number of syllables). Even as
a teacher of English, I'm still learning.
Our class mission is to enhance critical thinking, technology, and
communication skills among all students so that we may be able to become
independent thinkers and doers.
