Prior to becoming a chemistry teacher here at Captain Shreve, I worked as a
chemist (mostly environmental, but some explosives experience!) after I
graduated with a B.S. in Chemistry from Centenary College in Shreveport
(Class of 1984). I obtained my certification through Centenary's alternative
cerfication program. I have also earned my graduate Master of Arts in
Teaching at Centenary. (GO Gents!)
I've worked for the City of Bossier, Central Louisiana Electric Company
(CLECO), Thiokol Corporation (at the Louisiana Army Ammunition Plant), and
for a small private environmental lab known as "Mid-South Analytical". I
served as an adjunct instructor for Bossier Parish Community College,
teaching introductory chemistry and physical science for the allied health
program. It was then I realized that my "real-world" experience in a
laboratory really helped me reach my students.
On a personal note... I have an 11 year old son named Mitch, who is really
into cars! My husband, Bill, is an engineer for Kansas City Southern
Railroad. We have two dogs, multiple fish tanks, and "DeeJay" the cockatiel!
This is the first science class for most students, in which concepts must be
APPLIED, not just memorized. Critical thinking is a VERY important skill! It
is my hope that through relating my past experiences in the lab and with my
enthusiasm for the subject (yes, I AM a nerd!), students will look upon
chemistry as a tough, but enjoyable subject.
I teach the subject according to the state required comprehensive
curriculum. This curriculum provides a thorough yet rigorous introduction to
both college-bound and career-bound high school students.
Laboratory experiments are key to understanding the topics introduced in
class. I integrate as many experiments as possible into my instructional
time. Not only do the concepts from class get reinforced by these
experiments, but students also learn to approach questions using the
scientific method. I teach my students to properly observe, record, and
analyze data. Their laboratory notebooks rival those of undergraduate
students!
We here at Captain Shreve are most fortunate to have received a great number
of technological tools to help us instruct our students. Students have access
to a wonderful, state-of-the-art library. We (the science department)have
newer pcs in our classrooms with projection systems, internet access,
scanners and printers available for student use. I very frequently integrate
the use of a splendid 30-unit mobile laptop computer system, so that each
student in class may access the internet and use the many interactive
websites I have reviewed.
