Rotary Club and Reading Counts

Dear Parents,
In September, we will start our Rotary Club andScholastic Reading Counts program. The purpose of this letter is to explain the Rotary Club and Reading Counts, what it does for your child, and how you can help him/her achieve his/her goals.

The Mandeville Roatary Club has adopted Chahata-Ima to help encourage the 3rd grade students to read books on their own and respond to their reading. The boys and girls are to select literature books on theier own and fill out a book report form. The book reports will be approved and turned into Mrs. LaBella in the library. Once the students write 3 book reports (which must be approved), they will recieve a "Rotary Club" reading shirt. After which, they will receive a patch to iron onto their shirts each time they complete a book report. These reports will be placed into a special box in the library. At the 3rd grade promotion ceremony in May, Mr. Motions from the Rotary Club will select one report out of the box. This student will recieve a bicycle from "The Spokesman" in Mandeville. The student who reads and completes the most book reports will receive a Drew Breeze Saints jersey which is autographed.

Reading Counts is a reading motivational and management program that helps encourage and monitor independent reading.

How Reading Counts works:
· Reading goals are set and the child selects a book with a Reading Counts label.
· The child reads the book at his/her own pace.
· The child takes a short quiz on the computer to verify completion and comprehension of each book read.
· Successful completion of quiz is converted into points. These points are accumulated individually, per grade level, and school wide to meet goals.
· When goals are met, incentives are given to reward the child.

An SRI, Scholastic Reading Inventory is given to each child before he/she begins the Reading Counts program. This is a computer – adaptive reading comprehension test that assesses the child’s reading level. This level is called a lexile level. It is used to help the child pick out books within his/her reading level – not too easy and not too difficult. It is also used
by the teacher to adjust instruction according to individual needs and monitor the child’s growth.

This year our classroom goal is 1000 points. The students are excited and will earn a Reading Counts party for accomplishing this goal!! As students earn points, they are will participate in a movie and popcorn party.

Please encourage your child to read!!! Your involvement will help them excel in reading.

Thank you for your help and cooperation,

Mrs. Cole
