Don't Count the Days. Make the Days Count!
Students should be reading and logging what they are reading for their Silent
Sustained Reading time every day in English class and Reading class.
All 6th Grade textbooks (English, Reading, Math, Science, and Social Studies)
are written at a 6th Grade reading level. If your child is going to be
succesful this year and next year in the 7th grade (and upward), he/she must
continue to increase their reading ability and level.
Research shows that "students who read independently become better readers,
score higher on achievement tests in all subject areas, and have greater
content knowledge than those who do not" (Krashen 1993; Cunningham and
Stanovich 1991; Stanovich and Cunningham 1993).
Individuals read to live life to the fullest, to earn a living, to understand
what is going on in the world, and to benefit from the accumulated knowledge
of civilization (Cullinan 2011).
