I am a 41-year veteran in education. This is my sixth year as Curriculum
Coordinator at Ferriday Junior High School. It is my job to assist teachers
in providing the best curriculum possible to allow our students to excel in
all subjects.
I work with teachers in implementing instructional strategies that meet the
needs of various learning styles. I assist with professional development
and administrative duties. I do, however, have time for students who need
counseling or help with any facet of his/her school process. It doesn't
matter what I am working on when a student comes in and needs assistance; I
stop immediately and take care of that student.
I feel that teaching is a "calling." Therefore, a teacher must love
teaching and love the students in order to be successful. Further, I feel
that teachers should be "born salesmen." If you can't sell what you are
teaching to the students, it will be difficult to get them to "buy in" to
what you are teaching/selling. If a teacher can get students to buy-in to
what he/she is selling, success is inevitable.
At FJHS, we are making a difference ~ one student at a time. When I came to
this school, the SPS was 57.3 and today it is 71+. We are not where we want
to be, but we are making progress. Teachers are to be commended
for "stepping up to the plate" to ensure that students reach full potential.
I am happy to be a part of this progress! It is a new day at FJHS. Our focus
has been elevated: rigor, relevance, and critical/creating thinking. We are
on a mission to get students to "think" beyond just rote memory. We are
excited about 2011-12. This is a great year for our students to learn
something new!
I love children and I enjoy being an educator!
I am Dorothy Marsalis and that is my truth!!!
