 Unit Three

Unit Description

The purpose of the unit is for the students to develop a deep understanding of the relationship between fractions, decimals, and percents.  It does not teach specific algorithms with rational numbers.

 

Enduring Understandings

·         The understanding of fractions, decimals, and percents and the relationships between and among these concepts is essential.

 

 

Essential Questions

·         Why is it necessary to use fractions, decimals, and percents in daily life?

·         How are fractions, decimals, and percents related?

·         How can benchmark numbers help me understand fractions, decimals, and percents?

Students will know…

·         Fraction

·         Symbolic form ( representing a fraction with numbers rather than fraction strips or other non-numeric representation)

·         Numerator

·         Denominator

·         Equivalent fractions

·         Benchmarks (reference points for comparing fractions)

·         Mixed number

·         Improper fraction

·         Decimals

·         Percent

 

Students will be able to…

·         Assign parts of specified wholes the appropriate fraction, decimal, or percent name

·         Represent and compare fractions, decimals, and percents using multiple representations (e.g., fraction strips, symbolic form, shaded portions of regions, shaded parts of grids)

·         Developing skill in expressing a given quantity as a fraction, decimal, or percent and converting between them (e.g., understanding why 25% = ¼ = 0.25)

·         Use fractions, decimals, and percents to analyze and solve problems related to interpreting data and making comparisons (e.g., proportion of people who prefer a particular food, comparing different discounts on different prices for the same product to determine the best p
