How do I know how my child is doing?

Every Tuesday, I send home papers to be signed. Every Monday, I update your
child's averages on this site. Go to
http://teacherweb.com/LA/JHMS/JBUSH/g0.stm
and follow the directions for accessing your child's grades. Or, you can
come by our school between 12:15 and 1:00 (my planning period), and I'll be
happy to speak with you about your child's papers (or give you your child's
number so that you can access his/her grades).

How can I help my child study?

For language arts and social studies, there are usually vocabulary words
that
you can call out to your child, and you can also use the texts to ask them
about major points on which we are currently reading. Your child will need
to learn spelling words weekly as well as reading vocabulary and some
language terms.

Do you mind if a parent contacts you at home?

No, I don't mind. I encourage as much contact as reasonably possible. My
home phone is 259-9622.

My child never brings home any books. Is that bad?

Only if your child is not making good grades. The textbooks may be taken
home each and every day. My assignments begin in class, and if the child
finishes in class, he/she does not need to take the work home (unless you
want him/her to in order to make sure he/she is doing the assignments).

My child never seems to get any recess time. Why is this?

There's only one recess at JHMS, and that's the time remaining after your
child eats lunch (until 4th hour). We encourage the children to go to the
restroom during this time.

Can a parent help in your classroom?

Absolutely! I am always needing help, especially at party times. Parents
can also bring snacks to be shared by the whole class (Just let me know a
day ahead of time). Give me a call if you would like to be a "helping
parent"!! I also need a couple of parents to help with driving when I have
an
honor roll party (this involves driving to the movies).

Can parents come in and observe your class?

Sure. Parents are welcome anytime. Just be sure to check in at the office
first.

Do you paddle students?

I haven't in about 13 years. I haven't been convinced as to its
effectiveness as a disciplinary tool by the teacher. It has its place by
the administration and parents certainly.

Do you give homework?

Very rarely. Usually, if an assignment is not finished in class, it becomes
homework. I always try to start assignments in class in case the students
have a problem. Then I can help them with it right then.
