Dear 2011-12 PEI-PTU Parents:
In an effort to provide enrichment experiences to our children that are
developmentally appropriate, homework papers are not sent home from PEI (nor
are they a part of the regular education pre-k program). While sitting down
with paper, crayons, markers and pencils still provides a crucial step in
building pre-writing skills, the types of cut & paste ditto papers that many
of us remember from our childhoods have moved more into the domain of
kindergarten rather than preschool/pre-k.

At the same time, we encourage parents to be involved with their children by:
- checking your child's daily report each evening so that you can talk to
him/her about their day in school
- providing paper and writing implements (a tip from our occupational
therapist: break the crayons and pencils down to ~3 inches so that the only
way they can be grasped is in the appropriate 3-point pincer grasp);
- promoting language development by being a model of language use (a tip from
our speech therapist: constantly talk about what you’re doing as you work/play
with your child);
- reading storybooks to your children each day/evening, and then asking some
simple questions about the stories.

At 3 or 4 years old, learning is fun, fun, fun. Have some fun with your
