READING CHOICES - When you see Reading Choice written on the Weekly Newsletter your child will pick one of the following ways to practice their words. Please write the choice number on the blank provided on the Weekly Newsletter.
1. Hangman: Play hangman with the vocabulary words.
2. Mother May I:Show vocabulary flashcards to your child. Have him/her move one step towards you for every correct word. After your child tells you the word, have them say, “Mother May I.” For correct answers say “yes”, for incorrect words you say “no”.
3.Define the Word: Write the word and write its definition. You can use a dictionary to help or your child can write the definition in his/her own words.
4. Write a Story: Write a story by using as many vocabulary words as you can.
5. Sort A Word: Sort the vocabulary words by beginning sounds, ending sounds and/or vowel sounds.
6. ABC Order: Put your vocabulary words in ABC order. You only need to pick one list – phonics, story or challenge words.
SPELLING CHOICES - When you see Spelling Choice written on the Weekly Newsletter your child will pick one of the following ways to practice their words. Please write the choice number on the blank provided on the Weekly Newsletter.
1. Type Words: Use a computer or typewriter to type each word.2. Spelling Puzzles: Write the whole word on a card and then cut each letter apart. The child puts the letters back together to spell the word.3. Newspaper Words: Highlight or cut out spelling words from the newspaper or a magazine.4. Other Hand Words: Write your words using the hand you don’t usually write with.5. ABC Order Words: Write the words in ABC order.6. Word Search: Make your own word search or go to www.puzzlemaker.com and create one. 7. Read My Back: One partner writes a spelling word on the child’s back. The child names the word. 8.Sentence Writing: Write 5 complete sentences using as many spelling words as you can.
