English IV Second Semester

WEEK 1-JANUARY 3-6

Tuesday:    Journal #1: New Year's Resolutions  Discuss metaphysical poetry and the background of John Donne. Read and analyze "A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning. Identify metaphysical conceits and paradox in Donne's "Holy Sonnet 10" and "Meditation 17."  Homework: Questions on pp. 512, 513, and 515. 

Wednesday:  Check homework. Make a chart comparing the Seventeenth Century Puritan, Metaphysical. and Cavalier poets.  Define key poetry terms. Read about Ben Jonson on p. 516, and list five key facts about his life. Homework: Read poetry on pp. 518-520, and do questions on p. 518 and p. 521.

Thursday: Check homework and discuss poetry of Ben Jonson. Define key vocabulary words. Read and outline p. 522 about the Cavalier poets. Identify figurative language used in the poetry of the Cavalier poetry on pp. 524-527.  Homework:  Do questions on pp. 526 and 528.

Friday: Check homework, and discuss Cavalier poems in the text. Take an open-book quiz on "To His Coy Mistress" and "To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time."  Journal #2: Should You Live for Today? What are the pros and cons of the "carpe diem" philosophy? Homework: Work with mentor on the Senior Project Product, and study for test on Wednesday.

WEEK 2: JANUARY 9-13

Monday: Review background material on the 17th Century, and review the works of John Milton on pp. 480-494. Do worksheets on Milton's poetry. Do quote sheet. Homework: Study for test on 17th Century Poets on Wednesday.

Tuesday: Review the works of John Donne, Ben Jonson, and the Cavalier poets on pp. 510-527. Do review guide for test on Wednesday. Show excerpt from "Dead Poet's Society" as an example of the "carpe diem" philosophy. Homework: Study for test on 17th Century Poets on Wednesday.

Wednesday: Test on 17th Century Poets  Do Reading Comprehension activities on pp. 538-541. 

Thursday: Review vocabulary and quotes from unit on the Bible as literature. Do worksheets. Do activities on pp. 542-543.

Friday: Discuss various Biblical and mythological allusions used in British literature.  Do worksheets dealing with these allusions. Homework: Spend time with your mentor working on your senior project product.

WEEK 3:  JANUARY 17-20
Monday: Martin Luther King Holiday

Tuesday:  Read handout on  "The Restoration and the 18th Century.".  Define weekly vocabulary words.  Review Biblical and mythological allusions given in class on Friday. Journal 3: Why Keep a Diary?  HW: Read and outline pp. 551-554.  Begin studying for test on Friday.  

Wednesday: View video on the Restoration and the 18th Century. Discuss the development of the essay on pp. 564-565. Read and outline information about Samuel Pepys on p. 566.  Read excerpts from "The Diary of Samuel Pepys." Answer the first seven questions on p. 576.  Review for test on Friday on vocabulary and Biblical/mythological allusions.

Thursday:  Discuss the background information on Daniel Defoe and his famous novel Robinson Crusoe on pp. 578-579.
Read Defoe's "A Journal of the Plague Year" on pp. 582-586.  Answer the first six questions on p. 587.  Review for a test on Friday on vocabulary and Biblical/ mythological allusions.

Friday:  VOCABULARY TEST ON BIBLICAL AND MYTHOLOGICAL ALLUSIONS 
Read pp. 588-597. Discuss characteristics of Neoclassicism and satire. Do questions on p. 594. 
Homework: Work on product for senior project.

WEEK 4: JANUARY 23-27

Monday: Review characteristics of satire, and define mock epic, heroic couplet, and iambic pentameter. Discuss the background of Alexander Pope on p. 598. Read and analyze "The Rape of the Lock" on pp. 600-606.  HW: Journal 4:  What are the signs of vanity? (p. 599)

Tuesday: Journal 5: The Really Important Things in Life (Think of someone who is so concerned with manners and th conventions of "high society" that he or she fails to consider the really important things in life. How do you feel about that person?) Discuss satire, verbal, situational, and dramatic irony. Define vocabulary in context on p. 609. Outline the background of Jonathan Swift on p. 608.  Begin reading "A Modest Proposal" on p. 610. HW: Finish reading "A Modest Proposal" and answer questions in the workbook.

Wednesday: Journal 6: How Can We Fight Injustice? (p. 609) What are some things that people satirize in our world today? Discuss the satire used by Swift in "A Modest Proposal" and satire used in a historical context in Gulliver's Travels.
Define vocabulary in context on p. 623. HW: Read "Voyage to Lilliput" on pp. 624-634.

Thursday: Journal 7: Can We Trust Our Own Perceptions? (p. 623)  QUIZ ON THE SATIRE OF POPE AND SWIFT  Read "Vogage to Lilliput" on pp. 624-634. HW: Questions 1, 2, 6, & 8 on p. 643. 

Friday: Check homework. View video on "Voyage to Lilliput," and fill out worksheet while viewing the video.
Journal 8: Satire in "Voyage to Lilliput" (Identify who or what are the objects of Swift's satire. Quote specific passages in the text to prove your answers.) HW: Work on senior project product.

WEEK 5: JANUARY 31-FEBRUARY 3

Monday:  Read and analyze "Voyage to Brobdingnag" on pp. 635-642. HW: Answer questions on p. 643.

Tuesday:  Check homework. While viewing excerpt from "Voyage to Brobdingnag," fill out plot worksheets.  HW:  Journal 9: Satire in "Voyage to Brobdingnag" (Identify who or what is being satirized in the video.)

Wednesday:  Journal 9: Satire Today (What do you think Swift might satirize today? What silly human behavior, practices, beliefs, or attitudes do consider worthy of satire?) Discuss voice, diction, tone and purpose in writing. Read background of Johnson on p. 658, and do vocabulary on p. 659.  HW: Studay for test on Friday.

Thursday:  Read excerpt from Samuel Johnson's Dictionary on pp. 660-664, and analyze voice, tone, diction, and purpose of Johnson's writing.  Review Gulliver's Travels.

Friday:  TEST ON GULLIVER'S TRAVELS and 18th CENTURY BACKGROUND INFORMATION                  Journal 10: Why Tell Someone's Life Story (p. 669) HW: Read excerpt from Boswell's Life of Samuel Johnson on pp. 676. Do Comprehension Questions on p. 676.
