Basic Design Exam Review study sheet
The elements of design are the visual features or ingredients of a work of
art. They are line, shape, space, form, color/value and texture.
Line is an element of design and can be 2dimensional or 3 dimensional (wire)
Every object has a shape. Shape is an element of design. It is 2-d and
encloses an area. There are two basic classes of shape, geometric & organic
(freeform). A form is 3-d. Value is an element to create form.
Space is an element of design and gives the feeling of depth in a 2d work of
art.
Space is the distance between, around, above, below and within things.
Positive space is the object you are drawing. Negative space is the space in
and around the object. Positive & negative space share edges. Negative
space is the area in and around objects. It has a shape.
Calligraphic lines are thought of in connection with Asian writing.
Calligraphic lines are used to form “characters” like in the alphabet. They
change from thick to thin.
A blind contour drawing is a drawing exercise where you look only at what you
are drawing making a visual recording of what you are seeing without looking
at the paper.
In class we drew Mr. Stravinsky upside down. If we can learn to access our
right brain, we can learn to draw.
Value if an element of design that refers to the lightness and darkness in an
art work. There are an infinite number of values (grays or tones) between
white and black. Value is an element to create form.
The five line types are: horizontal, diagonal, vertical, zig zag and curved.
The three pen techniques we learned are:
Stippling (dots), Hatching, (lines that are parallel to each other),
crosshatching (lines that cross over each other).
