FLOAT ProgramMandeville High School Freshman Initiative Program Freshman Learning to Overcome Academic Tardiness Freshman students who have missing or late non-absence related classwork work will be assigned an academic lunchtime detention called a FLOAT session. Students will be able to recover a portion of the total grade from the missed work by attending FLOAT. NO test grades may be made up during these sessions, only classwork that a student failed to turn in when s/he was present in class. Students will be given a card to have his/her parent sign acknowledging the FLOAT session to be served within 24 hours. Students may bring a lunch from home or may prearrange to have a cafeteria lunch bag waiting in the FLOAT room. This is an effort to allow students to develop good habits by completing and turning in classwork when it is due. Most assignments are started in class. Often, time is given to finish an assignment the next day. Very seldom will a student have a lot of homework from Physical Science classes. Assignments are listed elsewhere on this webpage, written on the front board in class, as well as mentioned several times in class to the students. FLOAT may only be utilized three times per quarter (that is three times total - for all major classes). Once this level has been attained, the student will receive the usual grade of a zero for not turning in assigned work as prescribed in the syllabus. Part of the educational process is learning responsibility for the work assigned and turning it in on time. This is a skill that will be required throughout life!
