ACCELERATED READER
The librarian facilitates the Accelerated Reader Program for grades 1 through 7. Accelerated Reader (AR) is a computerized progress-monitoring assessment and personalized practice tool that provides valuable feedback on comprehension of books students have read. The goal of the Accelerated Reader program at MICS is to:
1. develop life long learners who enjoy reading
2. improve reading comprehension skills through reading practice
Reading fosters personal growth so encouraging students to focus on their strengths in order to improve reading comprehension and create an enjoyable reading experience is the key. For the 2011-2012 school year, two school-wide reading goals will be implemented:
1. 30 minutes of daily independent reading practice
2. all students average 85% or higher on Reading Practice quizzes
Meeting these goals should have a significant impact on reading growth. To help us achieve our goal, students will be asked to fill out a monthly calendar indicating how many minutes of daily reading practice they are achieving at home. We will begin with 20 minutes of daily reading practice for the month of September and October. Parents must sign this calendar and the student should return it at the end of the month. A copy of the calendar can be downloaded from this website under "Downloadable Documents" or through edline.
