Parent Letter

Dear Parents:

Welcome to the new school year. I am looking forward to working with you and
your child. The following is a list of information that you may find helpful.

HOMEWORK

Students will have a weekly homework sheet including their daily reading
assignments. It will stay in their homework folder for the week. Paper in
the left side of their folders should be left at home and papers in the right
side should be returned to school. They will not have homework on Friday.

On Thursdays, they will copy their spelling words once for homework.
Students should spend 15-30 minutes on reading homework. They should read
each assignment twice to themselves and once aloud to you. Math homework
should be finished at home if not completed in class. Bible verses should be
practiced frequently.

Please be sure to sign their homework sheet each day.

GRADED PAPERS

Test papers will be sent home on Friday. Please sign the papers and return
them to me in their homework folder.

TEST SCHEDULE

Monday Writing
Tuesday Reading
Wednesday	Spelling
Thursday	Math

Language, history, science, and health tests are given about every two
weeks. I will also take an oral reading grade once a week. I have attached
a handwriting chart for a guide to help your child in writing. You will also
find a list of math multiplication and division facts. I will let you know
on your child’s homework sheet which ones we are working on in class.

Reading tests will be graded according to the following qualities:
•	Accuracy – pronouncing words clearly and correctly without lip
reading or sounding them aloud
•	Expression – having good voice inflection to make the story
interesting and realistic; reading smoothly with good phrasing rather than
word by word; reading with appropriate speed and volume; alertness to
punctuation
•	Comprehension – ability to answer questions; showing a good
understanding of the selection being read

CLASS RULES

1.	Raise your hand.
2.	Follow directions.
3.	Be kind and polite.
4.	Pay attention.
5.	Clean up after yourself.

If a student breaks a rule, they will get their name on the board. This is
just a warning. Each check they get by their name will result in five
minutes loss of recess. If they get three checks, I will send home a note.
Four checks will result in corporal punishment or a call to parents.

ATTENDANCE

Do not allow your child to return to school within 24 hours of fever, rash,
or vomiting. While attendance is important, we do not want children to come
to school sick.

SUPPLIES

Please refer to the supply list. Students should bring their folders,
homework sheet, and reading books to class each day. Please do not allow
your child to bring toys or other unnecessary items to school.

Thank you for allowing me this opportunity to teach your child. Please let
me know if you have any questions.
