The primary focus of this unit is to help students become aware of the cultural diversities that influence the state of Louisiana. Students will be exposed to the different foods, cultural activities, arts, music, and language that played an important part in shaping the background of this state. The students will also engage in activities centered around the universal holiday, Valentine’s Day. The students will be able to recognize the different symbols associated with the state of Louisiana. They will become familiar with Louisiana’s authors who write fairy tales with a Cajun twist. Students will be able to compare and contrast traditional and Cajun fairy tales. Students will be able to identify Louisiana on a map, as well as identify it as the state in which we live. Other activities include sink or float, sorting symbols and identify the same initial sounds in words. Students will use symbols of Valentine’s Day to estimate, count, graph items, and learn about rhyming words. The vocabulary words for this unit is traditions, Mardi Gras, po-boy, doubloon, carnival, costume, more, fewer, float, gumbo, pelican, Louisiana, less, custom, harlequin, purple, gold, and green

We will continue to discuss these school and class rules:

   1.   Follow the teacher’s directions.
   2.   Use kind words and manners.
   3.   Walk in line without making noise.
   4.   Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself.

Zachary Early Learning Center has three general expectations that all students should strive to achieve. They are:

  1. Be respectful,
  2. Be responsible, and
  3. Be your best.

We “sing” these expectations daily, so ask your child to “sing the expectations song”.

Please read to your child daily. You will be surprised how much your child learns from listening to you read. Ask your child point to a letter, word, capital letter, period and sentence. We talk about these daily. Also, ask your child about his/her day. He/She will be so excited to “talk” to you about his/her day and what he/she is learning.

It is very important for you to review your child’s backpack daily for important notes. Please sign and return all notes as soon as possible.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call me at school, email me. We want your child to have a wonderful experience of the first year of school. Thanks for sharing your child with us!
