Learning is fun! So make it fun at home!!
Help your child write their name. Remember to tell him/her that only the first letter of his/her name is a capital letter, and the remaining letters are lowercase.
Practice reciting the alphabet and their numbers to 20.
If you have an alphabet book, ask your child to identify the letters. You can use any child's book at home to work on letter recognition.
After your child can identify the letter, ask him/her what sound the letter makes.
Ask your child what's the first letter of "Wal-Mart"? What's the first letter of the word "McDonald's"? Use your imagination with this one. If your child has a favorite story, ask him/her to identify letters or words in the stories.
Ask your child to show you his/her head, neck, elbow, knee, ankle, wrist, etc.
Practice positional words with your child: front, back, next to, under, over, etc.
Have your child sort any household items by color or shape. It could be socks, M&M's, Lego blocks, etc.
Talk with your child about ordinal positions: first, second, last, etc.
Of course, read, read, read to your child. Your child is absorbing EVERYTHING you say! Before you begin reading the book, ask him/her to tell you the purpose of the author and illustrator, and point to the front, back and spine of the book. As you are reading the book, ask him/her questions about what might happen next. When you are finished reading the book, ask him/her to tell you about the characters in the book, and have him/her re-tell the story to you in his/her own words. You will be amazed at how much your child will get out of a story!!
Enjoy teaching your child! Make memories with your child by because you are his/her first teacher. Take time to color with your child, allow him/her to cut with scissors, and let him/her glue or paint a masterpiece!
