LA Core 4 Curriculum

English - 4 units
1. English I, II, III, and IV
Math – 4 units
1. Algebra I or Algebra I-Pt. 2
2. Geometry
3. Algebra II
4. 1 unit from: Financial Math, Math Essentials, Advanced Math–Pre-Calculus, Advanced Math–
Functions and Statistics, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, Probability and Statistics, Discrete Math, or
a locally-initiated elective approved by BESE as a math substitute.
Science – 4 units
1. Biology
2. Chemistry
3. 2 units from: Physical Science, Integrated Science, Physics I, Physics of Technology I,
Aerospace Science, Biology II, Chemistry II, Earth Science, Environmental Science, Physics II,
Physics of Technology II, Agriscience II, Anatomy and Physiology, or a locally initiated
elective approved by BESE as a science substitute.* Students may not take both Integrated
Science and Physical Science.
Social Studies – 4 units
1. ½ unit of Civics or AP American Government
2. ½ unit of Free Enterprise
3. American History
4. 1 unit from: World History, World Geography, Western Civilization, or AP European
History
5. 1 unit from: World History, World Geography, Western Civilization, AP European History,
Civics (second semester – ½ credit), Law Studies, Psychology, Sociology, or African American
Studies*
Health – ½ Unit Physical Education – 1½ units Foreign Language – 2 units
1. 2 units from the same foreign language or 2 units of speech
Arts – 1 unit
1. 1 unit from: Fine Arts Survey, Art, Dance, Music, Theatre Arts, or Applied Arts*
*Approved IBC-related course may be substituted.
Electives – 3 units
Total – 24 units

All incoming freshman from the year 2008 and beyond will be required to follow the Core 4
curriculum for at least the first two years. There are no exceptions to this state ruling.
