School Vision
 
     Oil City Elementary Magnet School will provide all children, Pre-K through 8th grade, a comprehensive and well-balanced academic growth program built around the integrating theme of environmental science.
 
School Site Features
 
     Who is eligible for the program?
          All kindergarten - 8th grade students in Caddo Parish are welcome to apply for the program with a one year
commitment contract. However, transportation is only provided for children living in the following school
districts:
          * Blanchard                 * Herndon
          * Timmons                   * North Highlands
          * Mooringsport           * Oil City
          * Vivian

     Environmental Science Component
        Environmental science brings the real world into classrooms, empowering students to make positive changes
in their communities and the world. Environmental science introduces students to project planning, project
organization, decision making, problem solving, teamwork, letter writing, conflict resolution, public speaking,
and presentation; all skills which can be learned even by young children. These are skills successful adults
use in everyday life.
 
Operational Information
 
Change of Address
     The office must have your correct home address and a telephone number where parents can be reached during the school day for emergencies. Inform the office immediately if you change your address or telephone number.
 
Checking out of School
     If a student needs to check out of school, the parent needs to come to the office and check the student out. No student may leave campus without the signature of the parent in the check-out book.
     The office needs written notification of authorized person(s) who will be allowed to check the child out of class in case of illness or an emergency. Student will be checked out only to parent(s) or legal guardian unless written permission is provided from the parent(s) or legal guardian.
 
Withdrawals
     The following guidelines should be followed:
  1. The school office should be advised at least one day before student plans to
       withdraw in order to allow time for preparing the withdrawal form and clear
       records.
  2. Parent contacts the school secretary by phone or visit the school.
  3. Parent must then submit a written statement.
  4. Parent should notify school at least one week in advance so that proper records
       will be ready when the student checks out through the office.
  5. All debts and business matters must be in order or records will not be forwarded.
 
Dress Code
** OPTIONAL UNIFORM POLICY!
     Uniforms will be each individual family's choice. Uniform information may be attained in the school office.
 
     The Oil City Magnet School dress code is based on the mandated code established by Caddo Parish School Board. Students are to dress in apparal that is modest, tasteful, and does not interfere with or distract from the educational process or rights of others. Students and their clothing should be neat, clean, and well groomed and MUST meet the following guidelines:
 
1. Attire must not be destructive to school property.
 
2. For health reasons, shoes must be worn and hosiery is required for closed shoes.
 
3. Only tops designed to be worn outside of pants, shorts, or skirts shall be worn in
this manner.
 
4. Pants, shorts, skirts, and skorts must be worn at the waist. No "sagging" is permitted.
Sagging pants will be tied with the appropriate materials needed to insure that they
will stay up.
 
5. Head wear or hair rollers are prohibited in the building. Unnatural hair color (green,
blue, etc.) is prohibited.
 
6. Body piercing jewelry cannot be worn except in the ears.
 
7. Shirts, sweaters, jackets, and other tops worn over leggings must be no shorter than 4
inches above the knee, skirt length should be no more than 4 inches above the knee.
 
8. Sunglasses are prohibited in the building unless they are prescribed.
 
9. Bare mid-drift, see-through garments, white undergarment type T-shirts, bare backs,
haltar tops, tank tops, tube tops, and cutoffs cannot be worn. There are to be no holes 
or tears in clothing on the school campus.
 
10. Loose fitting shorts that are no more than 4 inches above the knee when standing may
be worn by students during the first and fourth 10-weeks. All shorts must be hemmed.
Cutoff shorts, rolled-up jeans, sweats, athletic or spandex shorts cannot be worn. No
other article of clothing can be worn beneath the shorts for viewing.
 
11. Obscene, profane language or provacative pictures on clothing or jewelry are
prohibited.
 
12. Satanic, cults, or gang related symbolism in any form is prohibited on school campus.
 
13. Drug-related symbols in any form including advertisements or promotion of alcohol
       or tobacco are prohibited on school campus.
 
14. Principals, after consultation with their School Improvement Committee, have the
       discretion to adjust the dress code to fit unique situations as long as the decision does
       not interfere with the requirements of Title IX. A teacher will also be allowed to restrict
       manner of dress or length of hair when it pertains to the health and/or safety of a
       student in that teacher's specific area.
