Instructional Programs Offered at Oil City Magnet
Junior Naturalist Program
The 5th grade students have the opportunity to become Junior Naturalists. This program helps students enjoy the outdoors and better understand plants, animals, and ecosystems of Louisiana. Students test their knowledge and learn about state symbols. Their training takes place at Walter B. Jocobs Nature Park located in nearby Blanchard, La. Students receive certificates for each knowledge area test they pass. These subject areas include orienteering, birds, amphibians, animal tracks and community service projects at Walter B. Jacobs Nature Park.
Accelerated Reader Program
The Accelerated Reader Program provides students at all ability levels in grades K-6 the opportunity to select the books and read them at their own pace. Students get immediate and individualized feedback to direct ongoing reading practice.
CCC Lab
Students in grades K-6 work in the Computer Curriculum Corporation Success Maker Lab (CCC) daily. Students receive individualized practice on reading, language arts, and mathematics skills that correlate closely with local and state curricula as well as with standardized tests.
Nature Day Camp
Students in 3rd and 4th grade spend one week at Walter B. Jacobs Nature Park participating in Nature Day Camp. Lesson activities include nature hikes, animal exhibits, leaf identification, life cycles, animal defenses, a visit to the recycling center, and making ice cream. Students journal daily what they learn.
Environmental Club
Sponsored by the Community/Industry/Relations section of the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). This club will meet monthly to discuss environmental projects to work on between meetings.
StarBase
Through this fundamental principle: Who I am makes a difference!, Starbase targets fifth grade students and teachers in a program that uses principles of aviation as its theme. Barksdale Air Force Base is the setting to demonstrate the everyday use of important aviation skills. Students attend this program once a week for five weeks and then take part in a ceremony to reinforce the theme.
Spring Science Academy
A partnership between the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center and the Sci-Port Discovery Center provides for hands-on demonstrations designed to enhance the science background of elementary students. The students and teachers attend the Summer Science Academy for eight weeks.
Discoveries
Discoveries is a program that challenges high achieving students to extend critical creative thinking skills in order to explore, develop, and present on subjects of their choice. This program is open to students enrolled in grades 2-5, who maintain A's & B's in all subject areas including conduct, are highly motivated and task committed and are nominated by a teacher.
