Extracurricular Activities

Listed below is a description of the clubs and activities offered at
Our Lady of Divine Providence School.


Altar Servers Ministry
is open to boys and girls from 4th grade through high school. They serve at school masses as well as Sunday liturgies, special feasts, and other events. This important liturgical role requires responsibility and sacrifice on the part of students and parents alike, since many altar server duties fall outside of school hours. In addition to serving at liturgies, altar servers also participate in social activities and community service projects. Mrs. Pat Usner is the school coordinator.

The Art Club is open to students in 4th- 8th grades. We will study famous artists and will work in different mediums such as pastels, watercolors, paints, chalk, etc. The Art Club will meet on the first and third Thursday of each month from 3:15-4:15. Students will be given a list of needed supplies and they should bring $5.00 to the first meeting to cover additional materials. Students’ artwork will be displayed at an art show at the end of the year. Mrs. Robertson is the moderator.

Bookworms is an after school activity for students in 5th– 8th grade. Students will meet on Wednesday in the Media Center from 3:15 to 4:00. Duties will include shelving the books, changing decorations and bulletin boards, helping prepare for the Book Fair and assisting the OLDP Library and Media staff as needed. Ms. Debbie Pelitire is the moderator.

Students entering 4th through 8th grades are eligible to try out for cheerleading. Membership is based on successful performance at tryouts which are held at the end of the year to determine the next year's squad. The cheerleaders lead the school in spirit at morning assemblies. Cheerleaders perform at football, volleyball, and basketball games. They also perform at Grandparents Day, Celebration in the Oaks, Catholic Schools Week and the parish fair. The school mascot, Pawz the Panther, joins the cheerleaders at all events. Cheerleaders meet on Fridays or as needed. Mrs. Costales is the moderator.

The Chess Club is open to students in 5th through 8th grades interested in learning to play chess and compete with others. The club will meet at least once a month on Wednesday from 3:15 to 4:00. Mrs. Gifford is the moderator.

The OLDP Festival Choir is primarily for students in the 4th-8th grades. The purpose of this club is to inspire a student musician who would like to sing and perform for special occasions throughout the school year. Student musicians should be willing to input a bit of something extra in the way of enthusiasm, positive cooperation, and regular attendance for each rehearsal. Rehearsals will be on Wednesdays at the 3/4th grade (11:50 -12:15) and 5-8th grade (12:20-12:45) recess periods. Ms. Stephania Simoneaux is the director.

The Environmental Awareness Club is open to all students in 4th – 8th grades. This club provides the chance to help improve our environment and have fun doing it. The club will meet on the last Thursday of each month for recycling at 7:30 am. Thursday after school meetings will be announced. Mrs. Gifford is the moderator.

Matthew 25 is a service organization open to all students in Grades 2 – 8. All students are encouraged to perform 25 hours or more of service to the community per school year. There are no regular meetings for this group. Interested students will be required to turn in documentation for all hours served. Students with 25 or more hours of service will be recognized at an awards assembly in the last week of school. The three students with the most service hours will be recognized with a special award at our closing mass. Mrs. Pitre is the moderator.

Mentors is a tutorial program that pairs early childhood and middle school students in grades 6th – 8th. Mentors will meet on the first and third Tuesday from 3:25 to 4:00 beginning in October. Requirements for participation are good behavior, regular attendance, and a minimum C average in all major academic subjects. Students in Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grades participate based on the recommendations of their teachers. Mrs. Lobell and Ms. Gerstner are the moderators.

The purpose of the National Junior Honor Society is to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, to develop character, and to encourage citizenship. Membership in the Providence Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society is an honor bestowed upon students in 8th grade. Selection for membership is by a faculty council and is based on scholarship, character, leadership, service, and citizenship. New members are chosen at the end 7th Grade, and all members are evaluated on a quarterly basis to verify that they are maintaining the standards by which they were selected. Ms. Gerstner and Mrs. Douglass are moderators.

Quiz Bowl is an activity for 6th-8th graders. Students participate in challenging question and answer sessions designed to glean information on a variety of topics such as science, literature, mathematics, history, and sports. Students will also compete in at least two tournaments during the year. Students will be chosen based on academic record and teacher recommendation. Meetings will be held every other Thursday from 3:15 to 4:00. The moderators are Ms. Douglass, Ms. Robertson, and Ms. Gerstner.

Safety Patrol is a group of responsible 6th, 7th and 8th grade students who assist with morning car duty or setting out cones before dismissal in the afternoon. Morning duty will be from 8:00 to 8:20 am and will consist of helping the teachers on duty to get the younger students from their cars into the Bahan Center. Students are generally scheduled for 1 or 2 days per week. Students must be dependable and take their commitment seriously. Coach Desiree is the moderator.

School sports include basketball, flag football, indoorball, and volleyball, and are offered for boys and girls in grades 5 - 8. All practices and games are held on weekdays after school. Some sports involve tournaments that may be held over the weekend. It is the responsibility of the students and the parents to arrange transportation to and from the practices and games. The coaches may not transport students to events. Commitment is very important! Students must understand that when they are chosen for an after schoolsport, they are committed to that team for the duration of that sports season (1-2 months). This includes attending practices, games and tournaments. Coach Desiree Ashburn is responsible for after school sports at Divine Providence, and other adults will also be coaching some of the teams throughout the year.

Student Council
is a student-led organization for 4th – 8th graders. The purpose of the Student Council is to increase students’ awareness of the democratic process by giving them a chance to express ideas and make responsible decisions related to school policy and activities. Student Council is responsible for numerous community service and school activities throughout the year, and for helping support other goals and activities of the school. Meetings will be held on every other Tuesday from 3:15 – 4:00. Representatives will be elected by each class. Officers will be elected by 4th through eighth graders. Ms. Arceneaux and Ms. Douglass are the moderators.
