Becky Hicks is currently in her eighth year of teaching band, and her
sixth year of teaching at Pitcher. She graduated from both Dominican
High School and the New Orleans Creative Center for the Arts (NOCCA) in 1994.
Her musical career started in fourth grade when she began playing the clarinet
in the school band. She began playing the electric and upright bass in high
school for various theaters, and she is now known around the city as "just
a bass player". While attending Dominican, she was awarded a four-year
full tuition scholarship to Loyola University in New Orleans based on her
academic performance. Mrs. Hicks majored in Instrumental Music Education
with Dr. Joe Hebert while at Loyola and continued to play for many of the
New Orleans area theaters. She graduated cum laude from Loyola and began
her teaching career at St. Mary Magdalen School in Metairie where she taught
both band and general music. In 2003, she started a Master's in Music
Performance degree at Southeastern Louisiana University under the tuteledge
of Dr. Glen Hemberger and Mr. Dave Carbonara. She completed her Master's
degree in 2005.
Mrs. Hicks has been employed by the St. Tammany Parish School Board
since August of 2004. She spent the 2004-2005 school year serving as band
director for 5th and 6th graders at three schools: Bayou Lacombe Middle
School, Alton Elementary, and Brock Elementary. She began her current
teaching position at Pitcher Junior High and Pine View Middle School in
2005, and she is still extremely grateful to her principals and supervisors
for her wonderful position. Mrs. Hicks has started an all-year jazz band at
Pitcher that has performed around the community and was recently invited to
play the opening of the new school board building in Covington.
In her free time (ha, ha) Mrs. Hicks continues to play her bass on the
weekends for musical theater shows and concerts in and around the New
Orleans area, and she is also a much sought after private bass teacher on
the Northshore. She has performed for the Mahalia Jackson Theatre, the
Saenger Theatre, the Jefferson Performing Arts Society, LePetit Theatre,
Southern Rep Theatre, and Rivertown Theatre. She has also played for
numerous high school productions including ones at Jesuit, Immaculatta, St.
Scholastica, and Mt. Carmel. In addition, she has performed with the Gulf
Coast Symphony, the Pensacola Symphony, and the New Orleans Civic
Symphony. In 2003, she played bass for the recordings used for two of the
live shows being performed at the Six Flags New Orleans theme park.
The purpose of our band is to provide a positive musical experience for
our band students through constant musical learning. Students will be given
opportunities to create & discover their own musical identities. They will
gain valuable life skills with every performance, and will use this
knowledge in practical applications. Our goal is to produce happy, smart,
disciplined, and productive band students who will go on to bigger and
better things in life.
