What is the best way to contact me?
You may send an e-mail---gayle.camus@stpsb.org--or,
preferably, send a brief note with your child. I will try to
answer you promptly, however, I am unable to answer lengthy notes
immediately, since my time must be devoted to the students.
Notes that require a long explanation will be answered the
following day. Brief notes that only require a few sentences will
be answered that day. I do try to check the e-mail daily,
however, the server is often "down", so I may not see it until
several days later.
What are the nightly homework procedures?
Nightly Homework Procedures
Every night, students will have math and language homework.
Math homework consists of two pages: one page from the Practice
Book (PPP for Pink Practice Packet) that reinforces the skill
taught that day, and one from the Louisiana I-LEAP practice book
(It will have a tiny Louisiana map in the corner.). Additionally,
there will be a fact family set to write and learn. (Fact
Families are written under the homework entry for that day.)
A spelling page (front and back) is sent home
on Monday and is due on Thursday, the day of the spelling test.
Pages that reinforce the language skills of the week will be sent
home from time to time. Both the practice pages and the
spellling and language pages are to be kept in the Red
Take-Home Folder.
Assignments are written in the red spiral notebook. Please
initial the assignment when your child has completed it. Please
supervise your child placing the pages back into the Take Home
Folder and putting it and the red spiral notebook back into the
backpack for the next day.
Lastly, students are to read a minimum of 20 minutes nightly
and log the pages read in the AR Log. Please initial it.
Having students learn organizational skills is a major
factor in school success. Gradually, I am trying to have
students assume more responsibility for organizing and completing
their assignments independently. Monitoring your child while
he/she completes homework and repacks belongings for the next day
insures success. Thank you for your cooperation.
How does the Red Take-Home Folder work?
The Red Take-Home Folder is to be brought home nightly and
returned to school every day. It is used as an organizational
tool to help students keep track of assignments, homework and
announcements.
Every day, the pages we have completed in the math textbook
(These are colored pages, that should be folded in half.) and the
homework pages from the previous night will be in the folder.
The previous night's homework will have a small sticker on it to
denote it has been checked and logged in my grade book.
Some students have chosen to keep their PPP and I-LEAP math
books at home. Others have them at school. Every other night a
page is torn out and completed for homework. Since these pages
are printed on both sides, each page is used for two nights.
When the page is corrected, it will have a sticker or stamp on it.
These are to be placed in the Take Home Folder as soon as they
are completed. Each page with stickers on both sides should be
stored with the textbook pages to be studied for the chapter test.
There will also be a spelling page (front and back) which is
due on Thursday, and from time to time, a grammar or reading page
will be included. These should be returnedto the folder as soon
as they are completed.
Notices and announcements from school are also placed in the
Take-Home folder.
Please place any notes/correspondence and lunch envelopes in
the folder, too.
Please check your child's folder nightly and remove
pertinent notes, announcements and completed work.
On Tuesday, graded papers are sent home. Students who
scored a C or less must have them signed and returned to school
the next day. Students scoring A's and B's may keep their graded
papers home.
When should I schedule a doctor's appointment?
Please try to schedule it in the afternoon. Math and
reading are taught until 12 noon. Since these are promotional
subjects for second grade, students should not miss them.
Our afternoons are busy, too. I teach until 3:45, when we
pack our bags. Students who miss social studies, science, and
written language activities are at a disadvantage, since these
subjects are complicated and often require more explanation than
is given in the textbook.
What is considered an excused absence?
Please consult the STPSB Student Handbook that was included
in your first day envelope. This year, students may not miss more
than 10 school days. When a child is absent, please send a note
explaining the absence the day the student returns to school.
Generally, excused absences are given for illness only.
Vacations, visiting relatives from out of town, etc. are not
excused absences. Students are not allowed to receive credit for
work missed on unexcused absence days, including tests.
Do students have to make up work missed when they are absent?
Yes. Every day, new skills are introduced. Each day's
skills are built on previously learned skills. Students who miss
work need to make it up at home so there will not be gaps in
their learning. Although I will try to work with a student
during recess or one of the special classes (PE,Music, Art), it
is impossssible to cover seven hours of work in a 10-30 minute
period.
