Homework
The purpose of homework is to practice skills and concepts learned in class. Practice is an important part of the learning process, and will certainly enhance student's success. Thirty to 45 minutes should be enough time to complete homework and students should work as independently as possible. An adult needs to provide a good place to do homework, make sure there are necessary supplies, provide assistance as necessary, and check the work when it's completed. Help the student develop regular habits for homework and study - the time devoted to this NOW will definitely pay off in later school years.
Homework should NOT take hours and involve tears and frustration. If this happens, please write a note letting me know what happened and why (Is the student sick? tired? upset about something else? Does he/she not understand the directions? etc.) Everything given for homework is thoroughly explained in class and related to something we worked on that day or week, so if there are problems, I need to know the details so we can figure out a plan.
Homework will be given Monday - Thursday. Required homework will be written down each day in the assignment book and is due the following day (unless otherwise noted). If the homework is not in class the next day (whether not done OR left behind), the student will receive a "No Homework" slip to be signed by a parent, and he/she will complete the work during recess. If not completed at recess, it will need to be done at home along with the current homework. This is such an important habit!
If there are extenuating circumstances, please write a note and your child may be excused. Sports, parties, dinners out, visiting, etc. are not considered "extenuating" and students will not be excused.
Weekly homework is usually consistent week-to-week with differences being the particular unit or page. Here are the typical assignments:
Reading: write sentences and draw pictures for 3 words in vocabulary book, study all words; read 15 minutes
Spelling: practice page Mon. & Tues., practice page or pyramids Wed., write words 3 times each & study Thurs.
Math: practice page, practice facts
The assignment book and all homework will be kept in the S.T.A.R. Binder.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
