Art Criticism and Aesthetic Judgment
Words to learn:
Aesthetic judgment
Art criticism
Emotionalism
Formalism
Imitationalism
Art criticism __ the skill of judging a work of art.
The four steps, which must be taken in order
1. Description what do I see? Give only the facts.
2. Analysis how is a work organized? Still collecting fact (about the
elements.)
3. Interpretation what is happening? / what is the artist trying to
say?
Your feelings backed up by observation.
4. Judgment What do you think of the work? How a work should be
considered.
a. Imitationalism art should imitate what we see in real life.
b. Formalism the elements and principles are organized properly.
c. Emotionalism art must speak to the viewer through her or his
emotions.
Aesthetic judgment __ the judgment you use / it has to do with the
reasons why we find a work pleasing to humanity.
Judging functional objects __ use the four steps but for judgment, you
must consider how the object works when used.
Judging your own work __ the analysis step will probably be the most
useful, find out why your work either needs improvement or is a total
success.
