Topic: Internship Objectives
Objectives: To focus on business and communication skills.
To develop goals with specific objectives and plans for
completion.
To work interdependently with mentor to develop work ethics,
team skills, and a sense of pride in belonging to a team.
To chart progress toward goals and objectives to enhance the
mentoring-intern experience and relationship.
Content: What are my three objectives?
What will I do to accomplish each objective?
What standards should I set so I can monitor and evaluate
my progress in meeting my objectives?
How will I obtain feedback from my mentor regarding my
objectives and the standards he/she will use to evaluate
my progress and accomplishment of my objectives?
Components: (1) Minimum is a 4-page paper, covering at least the
content areas stated above; these content areas are
meant be a "springboard" into your investigation and not
the only content that needs to be covered; other
content will vary depending on your internship position.
(2) Title page to include a specific title; your name; course;
and date.
(3) Paper should be double-spaced with 1-inch margins; no font
larger than 12; and a font that is professional looking.
(4) Bibliography with a minimum of three sources and organized
according to MLA standards.
(5) Addendum containing copies of the source material used.
(6) Organization, grammar, and spelling are critical components.

Topic: Teamwork - Infrastructure Design for Optimal Performance
Objectives: To investigate the internal structure of the mentoring location.
To detail the teamwork structure, discussing the teamwork
hierarchy and the responsibilities of the team members.
To design a flowchart that explains the team's overall and
individual relationships and interdependency.
To differentiate between overt and covert team policies.
To build the better mousetrap - that is, to reconfigure the
team to achieve more effective and efficient relationships
and performance.
Content: What is the infrastructure of my mentoring location?
How is teamwork designed and optimized?
How do I fit into the teamwork structure?
Am I performing in a manner that aids or hinders the team
effort?
What are the established policies regarding the team structure
and effectiveness?
What are the "unspoken" policies that contribute to the
effectiveness and performance of the team? Either Good or Bad.
What could be done to make the team more effective and
productive where I am interning?

Topic: Small Business Project
Objectives: To learn how to establish and run a small business.
To evaluate and apply your findings to your internship position.
To prepare a professional report in a timely and accurate
manner.
To value the importance of investigation, analysis, and data
preparation and presentation in running a successful business.
Content: What is a small business?
How is it structured?
What technology (hardware and software) is used to manage the
business and pay its employees?
What responsibilities and benefits must a small business provide
its employees?
What licenses and fees are needed to open/run a small business?
What laws regulate small businesses?
How can an individual obtain a small business loan from a bank?
...from the federal government?
How do the tax laws apply to small businesses?
Apply what you have learned to the business at which you are
interning.
Components: (1) Minimum is a 4-page paper, covering at least the
content areas stated above; these content areas are
meant be a "springboard" into your research and not
the only content that needs to be covered; other
content will vary depending on your internship position.
Note: even the teaching interns can look at their school
locations as small businesses; the principal at your
location is the financial manager and should be interviewed
as to how she/he manages the school budget.

Topic: An Intern's Perspective:
Dreams, Goals, and Realities
Objectives: (1) To relate internship objectives to real on-site experiences.
(2) To determine the usefulness and success of your internship
based on your experience(s), the knowledge gained, and
the
career and foundation skills acquired.
(3) To evaluate your career goals in light of your
determinations
from objective 2.
(4) To prepare a professional report in a timely manner that
reflects an accurate assessment of your internship.
Content: (1) State your internship objectives.
(2) Select one to three experiences that exemplify and
validate your internship objectives.
(3) Describe the experiences and elaborate on whether/how
your experiences at your internship met your objectives.
(4) Explain your perspective on actual jobs in your field now
that you have completed your internship.
(5) Discuss how the experiences, knowledge, and skills you
gained
have affected your career goals; i.e., are your goals the
same as those with which you entered the internship
program.
(6) Address advice to next year's interns on how to approach
their internships so each of them can maximize the
experience
for themselves and for their mentors, being specific rather
than general in your comments.
(7) Conclude with where you feel your career and educational
plans will lead you in the next ten years, being as specific
as possible.
