Knowledge is Power
"Only those who have the patience to do simple things perfectly will acquire
the skill to do difficult things easily." - Johann von Schiller
Mission
I want all my students to discover the principles of science that influence
the world around them and use them to benefit themselves and others through
their life and career choices. I want my students to realize that science
has applications in all walks of life no matter what their individual
interests or their career goals might be. Everyone should be knowledgeable
enough to enjoy and use scientific concepts and skills in a responsible way.
I received my bachelors degree from UCLA in 1971 and my masters degree in
1976. My background is in biochemistry research. I left high school
instruction in 1991 to work on a grant program at Tulane University for
three years, working on lung cancer research. In 1994 I returned to St.
Tammany Parish Schools and joined Salmen High School Faculty in 1995,
teaching Chemistry and Physics. In 1998 I began coordinating the Allied
Health Academy as part of our School-to-Work program and teaching Allied
Health I (aka Health Sciences I) which explores the ten health care clusters
and the skills needed in the health care industry. The next year Allied
Health II(aka Health Sciences II Medical Terminology) was added. In 2001, I
became the Intern Coordinator and the School-to-Work Coordinator for Salmen
High School, directing our career programs and managing Salmen's internship
courses. The Internship Program finds jobs for seniors that align with
their career paths as defined by their Individual Growth Plans; students get
the opportunity to learn, first-hand, about the career, meet people working
in that field, and form a network of support to get the right education and
skills to become successful. Learning and Life experiences are brought
together for the benefit of the students and for the businesses in our
community. With the inception of our Dual-Enrolled program (the student is
enrolled in high school course and a corresponding college course, earning
college credit), I became the laison between Salmen High School and the
colleges that offer dual-enrolled courses. Dual-enrollment is open to
juniors and seniors who are at least 16 years old and meet requirements as
outlined by the State of Louisiana and the participating college.
